Description
The IWI Mafteah 12 Gauge 14in Birdshead is a compact, semi-automatic 12 gauge with a 14-inch barrel and a bird’s head grip instead of a stock. At 27.75 inches overall it is classified as a firearm rather than a short-barreled shotgun, so it can be sold through a dealer without NFA paperwork.

IWI Mafteah 12 Gauge 14in Birdshead Overview
IWI US introduced the Mafteah, Hebrew for key, in 2025. It is recoil operated, with the recoil spring around the magazine tube, and holds five 2.75-inch or four 3-inch shells. The 14-inch 4140 steel barrel has a fixed open choke and a vented rib with a front bead. IWI lists a weight of 5 pounds 11 ounces. The polymer forend has M-LOK slots at three, six and nine o’clock and a removable nylon hand strap.
Why It Is Not an NFA Item
Because it was never fitted with a shoulder stock and is at least 26 inches long, the Mafteah is a “firearm” under the Gun Control Act, not a shotgun. That keeps it out of NFA short-barreled shotgun rules. Do not add a shoulder stock or a vertical foregrip; either can turn it into an NFA weapon that must be registered first.

Shooting a Grip-Only 12 Gauge
Without a stock you hold it at chest height with your arms, using the forend strap to keep the support hand in place. It is fast in tight hallways, but aimed fire takes practice, and recoil is felt through the wrists. Start with light loads, use a firm push-pull grip and never fire it with your face near the receiver.
Optics and Rails
The receiver is cut for Glock MOS-pattern plates, so many MOS optic footprints mount directly, and it is drilled and tapped for a Picatinny rail as an option. A red dot makes this much easier to aim at chest height. QD sockets on the grip and forend take a sling.

Ammunition and Reliability
Recoil-operated guns need enough momentum to cycle, so very light target loads may not run reliably, especially when the gun is new. Test your chosen buckshot and birdshot before relying on it. The cylinder bore throws wide patterns, so pattern buckshot at real distances to see what stays on target.
Honest Caveats
This is a niche defensive tool, not a hunting or clay gun. Muzzle blast is heavy from a 14-inch barrel, and the reversible charging handle and crossbolt safety take practice to use quickly. Accessories are still limited because the platform is new.
State Laws and Ownership
Some states and cities restrict short “firearms” built from shotgun designs, semi-auto shotguns or pistol grips, and a few ban them. Pennsylvania transfers include a PICS check. Confirm that it is legal where you live before ordering.

Before You Buy
Federal law treats this 12 gauge as a firearm rather than a shotgun or rifle, so a dealer may only sell it to a buyer who is 21 or older, with ATF Form 4473 and a background check at the counter. Have it shipped to an FFL near you, inspect it before you sign, and confirm that your state allows it before you order.
