Hornady Outfitter 30-06 Sprg 150gr CX – Rugged 20 Round Box

Description

Hornady Outfitter 30-06 150gr CX is built for hunts where the weather is part of the problem. Nickel-plated cases, a sealed primer and a sealed case mouth make it watertight, and the monolithic copper CX bullet leaves the muzzle at 3,000 fps with nothing in it that a lead-free jurisdiction will object to.

What Makes Hornady Outfitter 30-06 150gr CX Different

The CX bullet is Hornady copper alloy expanding design, the successor to the GMX. It is a solid copper projectile with a Heat Shield polymer tip, and Hornady rates it for uniform controlled expansion with more than ninety-five percent weight retention. On a 30-06 sized animal that means a wound channel that keeps going rather than a bullet that comes apart on the shoulder.

The waterproofing is the other half of the product. Outfitter cases are nickel-plated for corrosion resistance and both the primer and the case mouth are sealed, so a box that rides in a wet pack for a week in Alaska or a soaked pocket in Pennsylvania still fires when you need it. Ordinary brass in the same conditions will corrode and can eventually fail.

Because the bullet is monolithic copper, Hornady Outfitter 30-06 150gr CX is legal in California and anywhere else that restricts traditional lead projectiles. That is worth knowing before a trip rather than at a check station.

Specifications and Ballistics

Hornady publishes 3,000 fps for this load and Chattanooga Shooting Supplies lists 2,997 ft-lbs of muzzle energy, which reconciles exactly for a 150 grain bullet at that speed. The G1 ballistic coefficient is 0.418, respectable for a monolithic 150 grain bullet and enough to hold up well past four hundred yards in a cartridge that is not trying to be a long-range specialist.

At 3,000 fps from a 30-06, this is a flat-shooting elk and mule deer load. Copper bullets generally want a bit more velocity than lead-core bullets to open reliably, and 3,000 fps gives that margin at realistic hunting distances.

Field Notes

Verify your zero with this specific load. Monolithic copper bullets are longer than lead-core bullets of the same weight and frequently print to a different point of impact, so a rifle sighted in with 150 grain cup-and-core ammunition should be confirmed with Hornady Outfitter 30-06 150gr CX before a hunt.

Twist rate is worth a thought on older rifles. A long copper 150 grain bullet generally stabilizes fine in the standard 1:10 twist that almost every 30-06 uses, but if your rifle is an unusual custom build, check.

The nickel-plated cases are reloadable, though nickel plating is harder on dies than plain brass and the cases typically take fewer firings before the plating starts to flake.

Hunting other chamberings? The same Outfitter line covers 30-06 in 180 grain, 308 Winchester 165 grain and 270 Winchester 130 grain. Bullet construction details are published by Hornady.

For hunters heading somewhere wet, cold or lead-free, Hornady Outfitter 30-06 150gr CX is a purpose-built answer rather than a general-purpose load. MAG5 Firearms stocks it in the 20 round box, manufacturer item 81108.
