What separates Hornady Frontier 223 Rem 55gr FMJ from generic ball

The distinction is component quality. Hornady Frontier 223 Rem 55gr FMJ uses the same bullets Hornady sells to reloaders and the same brass it loads its premium lines in, rather than bought in components of unknown origin. Jacket thickness and core weight are consistent because they come off the same tooling as everything else Hornady makes.

In practice that shows up as tighter groups than steel cased imports and far better lot to lot repeatability. It is still ball ammunition and it will not shoot like match, but it will not wander between cases either.

Full specifications

• Caliber: 223 Remington
• Bullet weight: 55 grain
• Bullet: Hornady Full Metal Jacket
• Velocity: approx 3,000 fps from 16 inch barrel
• Case: Hornady brass, boxer primed, reloadable
• Rounds per pack: 150
• Chamber: Safe in 223 Rem, 5.56 NATO and .223 Wylde
• Intended use: Range and training

The 55 grain bullet leaves a 16 inch barrel around 3,000 feet per second and stabilizes in every twist rate from 1:12 through 1:7. Cases are brass, boxer primed and fully reloadable, which for a high volume shooter who reloads makes the effective cost considerably lower than the sticker.

Why the 150 round pack of Hornady Frontier 223 Rem 55gr FMJ makes sense

The bulk pack sits in a useful place. Hornady Frontier 223 Rem 55gr FMJ at 150 rounds is a full range session for most people, without the commitment of a thousand round case or the per round premium of twenty round boxes. It is the practical unit for someone who shoots monthly.

It also loads magazines cleanly. Bulk packs come loose rather than in trays, which sounds trivial until you have filled six magazines from twenty round boxes and collected thirty pieces of cardboard.

Honest notes before you buy

Zero with it if you intend to practice with it. Hornady Frontier 223 Rem 55gr FMJ will not print to the same place as a 62 or 77 grain load, and confirming your zero with the ammunition you actually shoot in volume is worth more than any component upgrade.

Save the brass. It is genuine Hornady brass, it is reloadable, and .223 is one of the easiest cartridges to load well. Even if you do not reload today, clean once fired Hornady brass has real trade value.

Getting the most from Hornady Frontier 223 Rem 55gr FMJ

This is the important caveat. Full metal jacket bullets do not expand, and Hornady Frontier 223 Rem 55gr FMJ is not a hunting or defensive load. It overpenetrates badly indoors and wounds rather than kills cleanly on game, and FMJ is flatly illegal for deer in many states. Hornady makes expanding loads for those jobs. Use them.

The 150 round boxes stack and store well. Kept dry and out of a hot vehicle this ammunition will be as good in twenty years as it is today.

The bottom line

Chamber compatibility is straightforward. This is marked 223 Remington, which means it is safe in a 223 Rem chamber, a 5.56 NATO chamber and a .223 Wylde. There is no restriction to worry about in either direction. You can read more about the bullet design at swiftbullets.com, or browse the rest of our stock on the MAG5 Firearms ammunition page.
