Description

Hornady 416 Rem Mag 400gr DGS is a serious cartridge for a narrow job. Item number 82674 loads a 400 grain Dangerous Game Solid at a listed 2,400 feet per second for 5,115 foot-pounds of muzzle energy from a 24 inch barrel, twenty rounds to the box. This is buffalo and elephant ammunition, and it is built to do one thing extremely well.

What a Solid Does That a Soft Point Cannot

The bullet in Hornady 416 Rem Mag 400gr DGS is a non expanding solid with a flat nose and a heavy jacket over a lead core. It is designed not to deform. On a Cape buffalo or an elephant, what matters is driving through heavy bone and thick muscle in a straight line to reach vitals or the brain, and an expanding bullet that mushrooms early simply will not get there.

The flat nose on Hornady 416 Rem Mag 400gr DGS is deliberate, and it is the part people miss. A round nosed solid tends to deflect when it meets bone at an angle. A flat meplat cuts rather than glances, which keeps the bullet tracking straight through a shoulder or a skull. That straight line behaviour is the entire reason African hunting ammunition looks the way it does.

Hornady 416 Rem Mag 400gr DGS is loaded to the classic 416 Remington Magnum specification of 400 grains at 2,400 fps, which is the same ballistic recipe that made the 416 Rigby famous and that the Remington case reproduces in a standard length magnum action.

Hornady 416 Rem Mag 400gr DGS Specifications

Figures are the published numbers from Hornady for item 82674, taken from a 24 inch test barrel. Most 416 rifles wear 22 to 24 inch barrels, so real world velocity will be close, but a 20 inch guide gun will read lower.

Recoil from Hornady 416 Rem Mag 400gr DGS is severe and there is no polite way to put it. Five thousand foot-pounds in a rifle weighing nine or ten pounds is genuinely punishing, and shooting a full box in one bench session is how people develop flinches they never lose. Shoot two or three rounds at a time, from field positions, and stop while you are still shooting well.

Do not confuse this with 416 Rigby or 416 Ruger. They are three different cartridges throwing the same 400 grain bullet at broadly similar speeds, and they are not interchangeable. Check the barrel stamp. We stock the 416 Rigby DGS load and the 416 Ruger DGX separately for that reason.

Using Solids Correctly, and When Not To

Hornady 416 Rem Mag 400gr DGS, like any solid, is not a general purpose hunting bullet. A non expanding solid bullet will pass straight through a plains game animal, dumping very little energy and leaving a poor blood trail, and it carries a real risk of exiting and continuing beyond the target. For anything smaller than the big stuff, an expanding bullet is the right and safer choice. Hornady builds the DGX and DGX Bonded for exactly that, including our 375 H and H 300 grain DGX Bonded.

The classic safari load out is a soft for the first shot and solids behind it. Many professional hunters want an expanding bullet in the chamber for the initial broadside shot and solids in the magazine for follow ups on a wounded animal going away, where you need to reach vitals through the back end. Whatever your PH asks for is the answer that matters.

Check that your rifle shoots Hornady 416 Rem Mag 400gr DGS and your soft points to the same place. Solids and softs of the same weight often print differently, sometimes by several inches at 100 yards, which is a problem when you are mixing them in a magazine. Confirm it on paper before the trip, not in camp.

Plan the paperwork early. Taking ammunition abroad means airline limits by weight, a US Customs form 4457 for your rifle, an import permit in the destination country, and quantity caps that vary by country. None of that is fast. Start months ahead.

If you own a 416 Remington Magnum and are heading somewhere that buffalo or elephant are on the licence, Hornady 416 Rem Mag 400gr DGS is a well made, widely trusted solid at a fair price. For anything else, buy an expanding bullet instead. Ships from our licensed inventory in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, with adult signature required on delivery.

A word on the rifle itself. A 416 is not a cartridge to buy a week before a trip. Stock fit, recoil pad quality and rifle weight matter more here than in any other class of hunting rifle, and a gun that does not fit will beat you badly enough to ruin your shooting. If you are having one built or fitted, do it early and shoot it through a full season of practice before you count on it.

Store the ammunition somewhere stable and dry, and take more than you think you need on a trip, because finding 416 Remington Magnum ammunition in camp is not realistic.
