Description

The Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine is the woodland camo version of the 995TS, a straight-blowback 9mm rifle with a 16.5 inch threaded barrel, a 10-round magazine and fully adjustable sights. It is one of the least expensive pistol caliber carbines on the American market, and the M81 pattern finish is the only thing separating it from the black version sitting next to it on the rack.

What the Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine Actually Is

The Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine is a blowback rifle, not a locked breech one. The bolt is held closed by its own mass rather than by a rotating lug, which is why the gun weighs 6.25 pounds for its size and why the receiver is a polymer shell wrapped around a heavy chunk of steel. The upside of that design is that there is very little to go wrong. No gas system, no piston, no adjustable regulator to fuss with, and nothing that needs tuning when you switch ammunition brands.

The M81 finish is the four color woodland pattern the US military issued for two decades. It is applied across the skeletonized polymer stock and the receiver cover, so the whole rifle reads as camouflage rather than as a black gun with one camo panel bolted on. If you already own the black 995TS, the mechanical package inside the Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine is identical and every accessory carries over.

The Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine ships with its barrel threaded 1/2×28 from the factory, which is the standard 9mm muzzle device pitch, so a compensator or a thread protector goes on without a gunsmith. A suppressor is a different matter legally. That is an NFA item requiring ATF approval and a tax stamp, and MAG5 Firearms does not handle NFA transfers, so plan that purchase through a dealer who does.

Where It Shines and Where It Does Not

The strongest argument for a Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine is cost per round fired. A 16.5 inch barrel wrings meaningful extra velocity out of 9mm compared with a handgun, recoil is mild enough that new shooters stay relaxed instead of flinching, and 9mm is the cheapest centerfire ammunition on most counters. As a range gun and a first rifle, that combination is hard to argue with.

The weaknesses of the Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine are real and worth stating plainly. The trigger is heavy and a little gritty out of the box. Ten rounds is the standard magazine capacity, and those magazines are not interchangeable with the C9 pistol, so spares have to be the carbine pattern. The rifle is also front heavy, with a balance point further forward than most shooters expect the first time they shoulder it.

Sights on the Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine are a rear peep with a post front, fully adjustable in both directions, and they work well enough that plenty of owners never change them. Picatinny rails are molded in for an optic, and a red dot is the single upgrade that transforms how quickly this rifle points.

Why Buyers Keep Choosing This Platform

The lifetime warranty is the quiet reason this design has lasted three decades. It follows the gun rather than the original purchaser, which means a used Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine carries exactly the same coverage as a new one off the shelf. Send it in, it comes back working, and nobody asks how it broke. Very few manufacturers at any price point make that promise in writing.

American manufacture matters to a lot of buyers too. Parts and assembly for the Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine are domestic, out of Ohio, and the company has been building this same basic action since the mid 1990s. The design is not elegant and it was never meant to be, but it is mature, and the bugs were worked out long before this camo version existed.

For home defense, a pistol caliber carbine like the Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine gives you three points of contact, a longer sight radius and noticeably less muzzle blast indoors than a short barreled rifle in 5.56. Those are genuine advantages, and none of them depend on what the gun cost.

A Hi-Point 995 M81 Carbine is the right buy for the shooter who wants a cheap, dependable 9mm long gun for range days, truck duty or a closet gun, and who does not mind a heavy trigger or a nose heavy balance. If you want a lighter carbine with better ergonomics and a crisper trigger, look at a Ruger PC Carbine or a Kel-Tec SUB2000 and expect to pay considerably more. Practical notes before you buy. Get two or three spare 995 pattern magazines, because only one ships in the box.

Budget for a red dot, which is the upgrade that pays for itself fastest. Zero the adjustable sights at 25 yards before you trust them. Full factory specifications are published on the Hi-Point 995 M81 product page, and you can compare this one against the Hi-Point 995P pistol or browse the rest of our rifles before you decide.
