Henry H17 Deadeye 357 Mag Gunfighter Overview

Henry built the H17 to complete the Big Boy family, giving lever rifle owners a revolver that shares their cartridge and their brass-and-walnut style. The Deadeye designation means a fully adjustable rear sight and a ramped fiber optic front. This gunfighter model wears the longer, squarer grip frame, which most shooters find easier to hold consistently with full-power loads. It has a polished blued steel medium frame, brass backstrap and trigger guard, a 4-inch round barrel and a six-round cylinder for .357 Magnum or .38 Special.

Gunfighter Grip With Magnum Loads

The square gunfighter shape gives the whole hand something to hold and keeps the revolver from rolling as far in recoil as a birdshead grip. At about 35 ounces the steel frame takes the sting out of 158 grain magnums, and .38 Special practice loads feel mild. Large-handed shooters and anyone planning a steady diet of magnum ammunition will usually prefer this version.

Adjustable Sighting

Point of impact can shift several inches between light .38 wadcutters and heavy .357 hunting loads. The fully adjustable rear lets you zero for the ammunition you actually use. The fiber optic front is fast outdoors, but it is not a tritium sight and it fades in dim light, so plan accordingly if the gun is a nightstand revolver.

Double-Action Function

Unlike a single-action cowboy revolver, the H17 fires double action for quick follow-up shots or single action for precise slow fire. Henry hand-fits the lockwork, and a transfer bar keeps the hammer off the firing pin unless the trigger is pulled, so it can safely be carried with six rounds loaded. The cylinder swings out for loading and unloading, and speed strips are an easy way to carry spare rounds.

Where It Fits

With a 4-inch barrel, a .357 Magnum is a strong trail gun for woods walks, a capable range revolver and, with good hollow points, a reasonable option for home defense. You give up capacity and reload speed compared with a modern semi-auto. Pairing it with a Big Boy lever rifle in the same caliber means one ammunition supply for both guns.

Things to Know

Magnum loads are loud and sharp indoors, so wear quality hearing protection and consider .38 Special for most practice. Ammunition costs more than common 9mm. The polished brass trim shows fingerprints and tarnish if neglected. Because the H17 frame is new, holster selection is narrower than for long-established revolvers, so confirm fit before buying.

State Laws and Ownership

Handgun purchase rules vary. Some states require permits, safety certificates or roster approval, and the H17 may not appear on every state roster yet. In Pennsylvania, handgun transfers go through a licensed dealer with a background check. Ask your receiving dealer about local requirements before you order.
