Description
The GSG 1911 22LR OD Green 5 Inch pistol gives you the weight, size and controls of a full-size Government Model 1911 in a 22 LR package, finished in olive drab green with checkered wood-look grips, so you can practice the classic manual of arms for pennies per round.
GSG 1911 22LR OD Green 5 Inch Overview
German Sport Guns builds this pistol in Germany and American Tactical imports it (factory model GERG2210M1911G). It uses a 5-inch barrel, an 8.5-inch overall length and an empty weight of about 34 ounces, so it fills the hand and points like a centerfire Government Model. The controls are where a 1911 shooter expects them: a single-action trigger, an ambidextrous thumb safety, a working grip safety, a slide stop and a button magazine release. It ships with one 10-round magazine and fixed sights. Most standard Government-size 1911 holsters fit, which makes it a practical stand-in for holster and draw practice.
Why Train With a 22 1911
A 45 ACP 1911 is a joy to shoot, but ammunition is expensive and recoil limits how long newer shooters can practice well. This pistol lets you run the same safety sweep, trigger reset and reload drills with almost no recoil and far cheaper ammunition. That makes it ideal for trigger time with new shooters, for steel plate matches with rimfire divisions, or simply for a relaxed afternoon at an indoor range.
Threaded Barrel and Muzzle Accessories
The barrel is threaded at the muzzle under the bushing, but the factory thread is a metric pattern rather than the common 1/2×28. To mount most rimfire muzzle devices you need the GSG thread adapter sold separately. A suppressor is an NFA item that requires an approved ATF Form 4 and must be legal in your state, and fitting one to a 1911-style rimfire usually means the original sights sit below the can, so plan on taller sights if you go that route.
Materials and Durability
To keep cost down, the frame and slide are cast from alloy rather than machined from steel. That is entirely adequate for 22 LR pressures and thousands of rounds of range use, but it is not a 45 ACP frame and should not be expected to last for generations of heavy shooting the way a forged steel 1911 does. Do not dry fire excessively without a snap cap, and avoid aggressive polishing or stoning of internal parts.
Ammunition and Reliability
Like most rimfire pistols, it is happiest with high-velocity round-nose 22 LR. Standard-velocity target loads may short-stroke the slide, and very cheap bulk ammo can bring occasional duds. Plan on a few hundred rounds of break-in, keep the chamber and extractor clean, and load magazines carefully to avoid rim lock. Spare 10-round magazines are inexpensive and easy to find.
Fit and Finish
The olive drab finish is an applied coating that wears at the edges with holster use, which many owners like as honest patina. The grips are checkered for traction and have a warm wood tone. Resale value is modest compared to premium rimfire pistols, but the purchase price is also much lower than a Browning or a full-size steel 22 conversion.
State Laws and Ownership
Several states maintain handgun rosters or capacity limits, and not every 22 LR pistol is approved in every state. Threaded barrels on semi-automatic pistols are also restricted in some states. Check your state and local rules before ordering.
