Grizzly 45 Colt +P 225gr JHP – Powerful Hunting and Defense Ammo

Description

The Grizzly 45 Colt +P 225gr JHP load, item GC45C+P3, is a 20 round box of 45 Colt +P ammunition from Grizzly Cartridge Company, loaded with a 225 grain jacketed hollow point bullet rated at 1550 fps with 1201 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Grizzly recommends it for hunting small game and self defense.

Grizzly 45 Colt +P 225gr JHP Overview

This +P 45 Colt load pushes a 225 grain jacketed hollow point to a rated 1550 fps with 1201 foot-pounds of energy, numbers that rival full-power 44 Magnum loads. In a strong large-frame revolver or a modern lever gun, it gives the old 45 Colt a fast, flat-shooting expanding bullet for hogs, deer-sized game and protection in the field. Because it is loaded well above standard 45 Colt pressure, it is strictly for firearms Grizzly lists as able to handle it.

Bullet Design

A jacketed hollow point opens up on impact, increasing its frontal area and transferring energy to the target while limiting over-penetration compared with hard cast bullets. At the high speed of this +P load, the 225 grain 45 caliber hollow point expands quickly and delivers a large wound channel, which suits medium game and defensive use.

Intended Use

Grizzly lists this load for hunting small game and for self-defense. With its speed and energy, it is also capable on hogs and deer at moderate handgun ranges, especially from a lever-action rifle. For large bears, Grizzly recommends its heavier hard cast +P 45 Colt loads, which prioritize penetration. Check your state regulations before hunting.

Firearm Compatibility

These heavy 45 Colt +P loads are intended only for strong firearms. Grizzly states they are safe in all large-frame Ruger revolvers, including the Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk, pre-2005 Vaquero, Bisley and Redhawk, as well as modern Model 1892 lever actions and Winchester and Marlin 1894 rifles. Grizzly states they are not intended for the small-frame New Model Vaquero. Do not fire them in Colt Single Action Army revolvers, replicas, or other standard-strength 45 Colt firearms.

Grizzly Cartridge Company

Grizzly Cartridge Company is an American ammunition maker known for heavy, hard-hitting loads for hunters, outdoorsmen and handgunners who carry in bear country, along with cowboy action, defense and safari ammunition. Its loads are made in the USA, and many are built to run at the upper end of what each cartridge allows, so always match the load to your firearm.

Recoil and Shootability

A fast 45 Colt +P load produces substantial recoil and muzzle blast, similar to many 44 Magnum loads. A large-frame revolver with good grips, or a lever-action rifle, makes it much easier to shoot.

Practice and Testing

Fire at least a box through your own firearm before you rely on this load for hunting or protection. Confirm reliable feeding and extraction, and check where it prints at the distances you expect to shoot, since heavy or fast loads often hit to a different point than light practice ammunition.

Storage and Care

Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading.
