Grizzly 45-70 405gr Cowboy RNFP – Classic Lever Action Ammo

Description

The Grizzly 45-70 405gr Cowboy RNFP load, item GC45/701, is a 20 round box of 45-70 Government ammunition from Grizzly Cartridge Company, loaded with a 405 grain lead round nose flat point (Cowboy) bullet rated at 1000 fps with 899 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Grizzly recommends it for hunting deer and elk.

Grizzly 45-70 405gr Cowboy RNFP Overview

The 405 grain bullet is the original weight that made the 45-70 Government famous on the frontier, and this Grizzly load recreates that classic formula. A lead round nose flat point is rated at a moderate 1000 fps with 899 foot-pounds of energy, similar in feel to the original black powder cartridge. It is a pleasant choice for shooters who enjoy traditional rifles, and Grizzly also recommends it for deer and elk at close range, where a heavy, slow bullet penetrates well.

Bullet Design

Grizzly’s Cowboy loads use lead bullets at moderate speeds in the tradition of black powder era ammunition. A heavy round nose flat point profile is safe in the tubular magazines of lever-action rifles and feeds smoothly, while the soft lead bullet is easy on older bores. Despite its modest speed, a 405 grain bullet of this diameter carries plenty of momentum.

Intended Use

Grizzly recommends this load for hunting deer and elk. Its modest speed limits practical range, so keep shots close and know your holdovers. It is also well suited to target shooting, silhouette matches and enjoying classic lever-action and single-shot rifles. For larger or more dangerous game, Grizzly offers heavier +P 45-70 loads for strong modern rifles.

Firearm Compatibility

This ammunition is made for rifles chambered in 45-70 Government, including the Marlin 1895, Henry and Rossi lever actions, Winchester 1886 reproductions, Ruger No. 1 single shots and Sharps and rolling block replicas. Its moderate speed is in keeping with traditional 45-70 loads, but original antique rifles such as Trapdoor Springfields should always be checked by a gunsmith before firing any ammunition.

Grizzly Cartridge Company

Grizzly Cartridge Company is an American ammunition maker known for heavy, hard-hitting loads for hunters, outdoorsmen and handgunners who carry in bear country, along with cowboy action, defense and safari ammunition. Its loads are made in the USA, and many are built to run at the upper end of what each cartridge allows, so always match the load to your firearm.

Recoil and Shootability

At a moderate 1000 fps, this 45-70 load delivers a slow, heavy push rather than a sharp kick. It is noticeably more comfortable than modern +P loads, which makes it pleasant for range days, silhouette shooting and long sessions with single-shot and lever-action rifles.

Practice and Testing

Fire at least a box through your own rifle before you rely on this load for hunting or competition. Confirm reliable feeding and extraction, and check where it prints at the distances you expect to shoot, since heavy, slow bullets often hit to a different point than faster loads.

Storage and Care

Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading.
