Description
The Grizzly 44-40 Win 200gr Cowboy RNFP load, item GC4440, is a 50 round box of 44-40 Winchester ammunition from Grizzly Cartridge Company, loaded with a 200 grain lead round nose flat point (Cowboy) bullet rated at 1050 fps with 490 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Grizzly recommends it for target shooting.
Grizzly 44-40 Win 200gr Cowboy RNFP Overview
The 44-40 Winchester was introduced with the Winchester 1873 rifle, and for decades it let frontier settlers carry one cartridge for both rifle and revolver. Today it remains a favorite of cowboy action shooters using faithful reproductions. This Grizzly Cowboy load uses a 200 grain lead round nose flat point at a rated 1050 fps with 490 foot-pounds of energy, a traditional recipe that feeds well in lever guns and shoots cleanly in single action revolvers. A 50 round box covers a full match day.
Bullet Design
Grizzly’s Cowboy loads use lead bullets at moderate speeds for target shooting and cowboy action matches. A round nose flat point profile feeds smoothly through revolver cylinders and lever-action carriers, and the flat tip is safe in tubular magazines where the bullet of one round rests against the primer of the next. Soft lead is gentle on steel targets and bores.
Intended Use
Grizzly lists this as a target shooting load. It is ideal for cowboy action and SASS-style matches, steel targets and plinking with 44-40 revolvers and lever-action rifles. Many matches set velocity limits, so check your club rules before competing. It is not intended for hunting or self-defense.
Firearm Compatibility
This ammunition is made for revolvers and lever-action rifles chambered in 44-40 Winchester, also known as 44 WCF, including reproduction Colt Single Action Army style revolvers, Remington 1875 and 1858 conversion replicas, and Winchester 1873 and 1892 style rifles from Uberti, Cimarron, Taylor and Company and others. Do not fire it in a 44 Special or 44 Magnum firearm, and have original antique firearms checked by a gunsmith before use.
Grizzly Cartridge Company
Grizzly Cartridge Company is an American ammunition maker known for heavy, hard-hitting loads for hunters, outdoorsmen and handgunners who carry in bear country, along with cowboy action, defense and safari ammunition. Its loads are made in the USA, and many are built to run at the upper end of what each cartridge allows, so always match the load to your firearm.
Recoil and Shootability
Loaded to traditional speeds, the 44-40 has mild recoil that makes it pleasant for long cowboy action matches and casual target shooting in both revolvers and lever-action rifles.
Practice and Testing
Fire at least a box through your own firearm before you rely on this load for hunting, competition or protection. Confirm reliable feeding and extraction, and check where it prints at the distances you expect to shoot, since heavy or fast loads often hit to a different point than light practice ammunition.
Storage and Care
Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading.
