Description
The Grizzly 40 SW 180gr JHP load, item GC4SW4, is a 20 round box of 40 S&W ammunition from Grizzly Cartridge Company, loaded with a 180 grain jacketed hollow point bullet rated at 1125 fps. Grizzly recommends it for shooting and self defense.
Grizzly 40 SW 180gr JHP Overview
The 180 grain bullet is the original and still one of the most trusted weights for the 40 S&W. This Grizzly load drives a 180 grain jacketed hollow point to a rated 1125 fps, noticeably faster than the roughly 950 to 1000 fps of many standard 180 grain duty load offerings. The added speed helps the hollow point expand reliably and gives the 40 caliber more energy, making it a strong choice for carry and home defense in full-size pistols.
Bullet Design
A jacketed hollow point opens up on impact, increasing its frontal area and transferring energy to the target while limiting over-penetration compared with solid bullets. The 180 grain weight was the original 40 S&W bullet weight and remains a proven balance of penetration and expansion.
Intended Use
Grizzly lists this load for shooting and self-defense. It is a solid carry and home defense load for 40 S&W pistols, especially full-size models that handle its stronger recoil well. Practice with it so you know where it prints compared with lighter training ammunition.
Firearm Compatibility
This ammunition is made for handguns chambered in 40 S&W, including the Glock 22, 23 and 27, the Smith and Wesson M&P40, the SIG P320 and P229 in 40, and the Springfield XD in 40. Do not fire it in a 10mm Auto or 357 SIG firearm.
Grizzly Cartridge Company
Grizzly Cartridge Company is an American ammunition maker known for heavy, hard-hitting loads for hunters, outdoorsmen and handgunners who carry in bear country, along with cowboy action, defense and safari ammunition. Its loads are made in the USA, and many are built to run at the upper end of what each cartridge allows, so always match the load to your firearm.
Recoil and Shootability
The 40 S&W has a sharp recoil impulse, and a 180 grain bullet at this speed delivers a firm push. It is controllable in full-size duty pistols with a firm grip, while compact pistols feel livelier, so practice with the load you carry.
Practice and Testing
Fire at least a box through your own firearm before you rely on this load for hunting or protection. Confirm reliable feeding and extraction, and check where it prints at the distances you expect to shoot, since heavy or fast loads often hit to a different point than light practice ammunition.
Storage and Care
Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading.
