Grizzly 38 Special 148gr JHP – Reliable Defense Ammo

Description

The Grizzly 38 Special 148gr JHP load, item GC38SP3, is a 20 round box of 38 Special ammunition from Grizzly Cartridge Company, loaded with a 148 grain jacketed hollow point bullet rated at 950 fps. Grizzly recommends it for self defense.

Grizzly 38 Special 148gr JHP Overview

The 38 Special remains one of the most carried revolver cartridges in the country, and this Grizzly load is built for personal protection at standard pressure. A 148 grain jacketed hollow point is rated at 950 fps, a moderate speed that keeps recoil manageable in small revolvers while delivering a heavier bullet than many lightweight defense loads. Because it is loaded to standard pressure, it is suitable for older revolvers and lightweight models that are not rated for +P ammunition.

Bullet Design

A jacketed hollow point opens up on impact, increasing its frontal area and transferring energy to the target while limiting over-penetration compared with solid bullets. Grizzly loads its JHP rounds for self-defense, with a jacket designed to hold together as the bullet expands. At 38 Special speeds, a well-designed hollow point is the most common choice for personal protection.

Intended Use

Grizzly lists this load for self-defense. It is well suited to concealed carry and home defense in 38 Special revolvers of all sizes. Practice with the same load you carry so you know where it hits and how it recoils in your revolver. For outdoor protection against animals, Grizzly offers hard Bonebreaker flat point loads in 38 Special.

Firearm Compatibility

This ammunition is made for revolvers chambered in 38 Special, and it can also be fired in any 357 Magnum revolver or lever-action rifle. Popular choices include Smith and Wesson J-frame and K-frame revolvers, the Ruger LCR and SP101, the Taurus 856 and the Colt Cobra. Standard-pressure loads like this are suitable for older and lightweight revolvers that are not rated for +P ammunition.

Grizzly Cartridge Company

Grizzly Cartridge Company is an American ammunition maker known for heavy, hard-hitting loads for hunters, outdoorsmen and handgunners who carry in bear country, along with cowboy action, defense and safari ammunition. Its loads are made in the USA, and many are built to run at the upper end of what each cartridge allows, so always match the load to your firearm.

Recoil and Shootability

The 38 Special is known for manageable recoil. In a steel-frame revolver it is mild and easy to shoot well, while lightweight alloy snub-nose revolvers produce a sharper snap, so practice with the load you plan to carry.

Practice and Testing

Fire at least a box through your own firearm before you rely on this load for hunting, competition or protection. Confirm reliable feeding and extraction, and check where it prints at the distances you expect to shoot, since heavy or fast loads often hit to a different point than light practice ammunition.

Storage and Care

Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading.
