Description

The Fort Scott 556 NATO 62gr TUI Brass load is a 20 round box of 5.56 NATO ammunition from Fort Scott Munitions, an American company in Fort Scott, Kansas. It uses a 62 grain Solid Brass Spun (SBS) bullet with the company’s Tumble Upon Impact design, and Fort Scott lists a test velocity of 3,200 fps from a 24 inch barrel with a 1:7 twist.

Fort Scott 556 NATO 62gr TUI Brass Overview

This 5.56 NATO load uses a 62 grain bullet turned from solid brass instead of copper, tested at 3,200 fps from a 24 inch barrel with a 1:7 twist. Brass is a little less dense than copper, so the bullet is longer for its weight, which suits the fast twist rates common in modern AR-15 barrels. Like other Fort Scott loads, it is built to tumble after impact rather than fragment, aiming for consistent penetration and a large wound path. It is a lead-free option for home defense, predators and range use where lead projectiles are restricted.

How TUI Works

Fort Scott’s patented Tumble Upon Impact (TUI) design works differently from an expanding hunting bullet. Rather than mushrooming, the lathe-turned brass bullet is engineered so it begins to yaw and tumble shortly after it enters a target. A tumbling bullet presents its full length as it travels, creating a large wound channel while retaining its weight because it does not fragment or shed petals. That means deep, consistent penetration and no lead fragments in game meat.

Non-Lead Construction

Because the bullet is a single piece of brass turned on a lathe, it contains no lead core. That makes it compliant in areas that restrict lead ammunition for hunting and reduces lead exposure at the range. Monolithic bullets are longer than lead-core bullets of the same weight, so Fort Scott tunes seating depth and powder charge for each load.

Firearm Compatibility

Fire this ammunition in rifles chambered for 5.56 NATO or 223 Wylde. Rifles marked only 223 Remington may not be rated for 5.56 NATO pressure, so check your barrel marking and maker’s guidance first. The long brass bullet is best stabilized by fast twists such as 1:7 or 1:8; test accuracy in 1:9 barrels and avoid 1:12 barrels. Never use it in a 300 Blackout firearm.

Accuracy and Testing

Every rifle has its own preferences. Before you hunt with this load, fire several groups at your usual distance to confirm point of impact. Solid brass bullets often shoot to a different point than lead-core ammunition of the same weight, so a fresh zero check is always worth the time, and clean copper fouling from the bore if accuracy starts to drift.

Recoil and Shootability

Recoil is very light, as with any 5.56 load, making it easy to shoot quickly and accurately. Short-barreled rifles and pistols will produce lower velocity and more blast than the 24 inch test barrel.
