Description
The FN SS195LF 27gr Lead Free load, item 10700013, is a 50 round box of 5.7x28mm ammunition from FN America, loaded with a 27 grain aluminum-core jacketed hollow point bullet rated at 1,890 (Five-seveN pistol) fps. FN America designed the 5.7x28mm cartridge, and SS195LF is its everyday sporting load.
FN SS195LF 27gr Lead Free Overview
FN developed the 5.7x28mm in the late 1980s for the P90 personal defense weapon and later the Five-seveN pistol. SS195LF is the company’s non-toxic sporting cartridge for the round, combining a light 27 grain aluminum-core jacketed hollow point with a lead-free primer. Removing lead from the primer reduces airborne contamination, which is why this load is popular at indoor ranges. The light, fast bullet produces very little recoil, making it easy to shoot well and pleasant for long sessions with any 5.7x28mm pistol or carbine.
Intended Use
This is target and range ammunition rather than a dedicated defensive load. Use it to build skill, break in a new firearm and confirm function. For personal protection, choose a load specifically designed and tested for that purpose.
Bullet and Ballistics
FN lists 1,890 fps and 222 ft-lbs of energy from a Five-seveN, and 2,132 fps with 282 ft-lbs from the longer PS90 barrel. The aluminum core keeps the bullet very light for its length. While the bullet has a hollow point, FN markets SS195LF as a sporting cartridge, not a dedicated defensive load, so choose the FN DFNS SS200 if personal protection is the goal.
Firearm Compatibility
Fire this ammunition only in firearms chambered for 5.7x28mm, such as the FN Five-seveN and PS90, Ruger-57 and LC Carbine, and other pistols and carbines built for the round. It is not interchangeable with 22 TCM, 5.56 NATO or any other cartridge.
Reliability and Testing
Factory ammunition from an established maker is held to consistent standards, but every firearm is a little different. Shoot at least a box through your gun before you rely on any load, and watch for clean primer strikes, smooth feeding and positive extraction. If you shoot more than one load, note where each one prints at your usual distance so you can adjust your sights or holds.
Recoil and Shootability
Recoil and muzzle rise are minimal, a hallmark of the 5.7x28mm. That makes it a great round for new shooters and for practicing fast strings of fire. Pistols produce noticeable muzzle blast, so good hearing protection is essential, especially indoors.
Storage and Care
Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading, and set aside anything that looks damaged.
Choosing Between SS195LF and SS200
FN offers two main 5.7x28mm loads for civilian shooters. SS195LF is the sporting round, built for training, plinking and indoor range use thanks to its lead-free primer. The FN DFNS SS200 uses a heavier 30 grain hollow point with a frangible copper-tin core and was tested to the FBI protocol for defensive use. Many owners train with SS195LF and keep SS200 loaded for protection, confirming that both shoot to a similar point of impact in their gun.
