Description

The FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE is the same pistol as the black SCAR 15P wearing a different anodize, and that is a more meaningful difference than it sounds. Flat Dark Earth on this gun is anodized into the aluminum rather than sprayed on top of it, so the color goes where the finish goes and wears the way the finish wears.

Everything mechanical is unchanged. Part number 38-101241 is the FDE, thirty round, 5.56 build of the same short stroke piston platform, on the same monolithic receiver, with the same 7.5 inch chrome lined barrel.

What the FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE actually is

  • A 5.56x45mm NATO semi-automatic pistol, part number 38-101241, in Flat Dark Earth.
  • A short stroke gas piston action rather than direct impingement, so gas is vented at the block instead of into the receiver.
  • A 7.5 inch hammer forged, chrome lined, free floating barrel with a three prong flash hider.
  • A Flat Dark Earth anodized monolithic aluminum receiver with MIL-STD-1913 rails at four positions.
  • An FDE polymer grip and a Picatinny stock adapter at the rear, which is what the VPR designation means.
  • A thirty round magazine supplied, feeding the standard STANAG pattern. 19.75 in. overall, 5.65 lb.

What Flat Dark Earth actually buys you on the FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE

  • The finish is a hard anodize with the color in it, not a coating over black. Scratches show bare aluminum rather than a different colored layer underneath.
  • Anodizing is thinner than any sprayed finish, so it does not change tolerances on a receiver that also serves as the optic rail.
  • FDE hides dust, dry grass and sand in a way black does not, which is the practical reason the color exists.
  • It runs cooler in sun than black does. On a gun with a 7.5 inch barrel and a lot of exposed rail, that is not nothing.
  • FN also builds this in black under part number 38-101240, and we stock it. The two are mechanically identical.

Feeding and outfitting the FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE

FN publishes the factory sheet on its own site if you want the manufacturer numbers next to ours: the SCAR 15P product page lists eight VPR part numbers and confirms that 38-101241 is the Flat Dark Earth thirty round 5.56 build.

  • Magazines are the easy part. Magpul lists the PMAG 30 AR/M4 GEN M3 as compatible with STANAG 4179 platforms including the SCAR, so the common magazine is also the correct one.
  • For volume practice, Federal 5.56 NATO 55 grain FMJ is the standard load and the sensible thing to feed it by the case.
  • Short barrels punish light bullets. If the FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE is going to do anything beyond punching paper, test a heavier bonded or barrier blind load and see what it actually groups.
  • Four rails is an invitation to overload a 5.65 pound pistol. A light and a sling point is usually the right answer and the rest is weight.
  • Expect noise and flash. A 7.5 inch 5.56 behind a flash hider is loud in a way a carbine simply is not, and indoor shooting without hearing protection is not an option.

Black or FDE, and a word on configuration

Mechanically there is nothing to choose between them. We stock the black SCAR 15P under part number 38-101240 at the same specification, so the decision is finish and nothing else. FDE hides dust and runs cooler in the sun; black hides carbon and matches most accessories without thought.

On configuration: this is a pistol. It ships with a Picatinny stock adapter and no brace and no stock, and it must stay that way unless it is registered as a short barreled rifle. MAG5 does not sell NFA items, so that route runs through a dealer who handles those transfers and requires ATF approval first. FN builds a braced version under separate part numbers, so ask us rather than buying the FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE and fitting one yourself.

Why the FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE earns its place

  • The FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE receiver is marked multi-caliber, and FN builds the same pistol in 300 BLK. The platform is not a dead end.
  • A piston gun at 7.5 inches stays far cleaner than a direct impingement gun of the same length, which is where short 5.56 guns usually disappoint.
  • The monolithic upper means the optic rail and the barrel are one piece of aluminum, so zero survives taking the gun apart.
  • Ambidextrous controls come standard on the FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE rather than as a parts purchase.
  • The FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE feeds standard AR magazines, so the running cost matches every other 5.56 you own.

The FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE suits the buyer who wants the SCAR piston system at its most compact and prefers the finish that does not show dust. Practically it is a bag gun, a vehicle gun or a short home defense gun, and at 19.75 inches overall it fits places a carbine does not.

Be honest about the ballistics before you buy. A 7.5 inch barrel gives up a lot of velocity against sixteen inches, and 5.56 does its work through velocity. That is irrelevant across a room and it matters a great deal past a hundred yards. Every firearm on this page ships to your chosen FFL for transfer and pickup.

One last practical point. Flat Dark Earth is not a single standard shade, and FN anodize is on the browner side of the range. If you are matching an optic, a light body or a sling to the FN SCAR 15P VPR FDE, order from a maker who shows the actual part next to an FN receiver rather than trusting the words on the box. Mismatched tan is more obvious in daylight than most people expect, and it is the one thing owners of this finish complain about.
