Description
The Fiocchi Golden Goose 12ga BB Steel shell, item 1235GGBB, is a 12 gauge, 3 1/2 inch waterfowl load with 1 5/8 oz of #BB plated steel shot at a rated 1430 fps. Golden Goose is the Fiocchi line built specifically for goose hunters.
Fiocchi Golden Goose 12ga BB Steel Overview
Fiocchi designed Golden Goose for hunters who need power on big birds at real-world goose distances. The 3 1/2 inch hull carries a heavy 1 5/8 ounce charge of BB steel, and Fiocchi pairs it with heavy-duty wads and primers chosen for reliability in cold, wet conditions. The company describes the goal as high velocity and dense patterns on passing birds, from long shots to fast flurries over decoys. For Canada geese and other large waterfowl, this combination of a heavy payload and big pellets is a proven formula.
Shot Size and Game
BB steel is a classic goose size. It keeps enough pellet energy to penetrate heavy feathers on Canada geese and other large birds, while still holding a reasonable pattern. Many hunters also use it for big ducks at longer range. Pattern your gun with this load before the season, because steel patterns differently than lead and every choke and barrel combination reacts a little differently.
Speed and Steel
At a rated 1430 fps this is a fast waterfowl load. Higher speed helps steel shot hold energy downrange and shortens the lead you need on crossing birds. Fiocchi uses plated steel shot, which resists corrosion and helps pellets flow smoothly through the barrel for consistent patterns.
Choke and Barrel Notes
Steel shot does not compress like lead, so it patterns tighter through a given choke. Most makers recommend improved cylinder or modified chokes with steel, and some older barrels and full chokes are not rated for steel at all. Check your gun manual or the markings on your choke tubes before shooting steel, and never fire steel through a choke marked lead only. Older fixed-choke guns and fine double guns should be checked by a gunsmith first.
Chamber and Recoil
Fire this shell only in 12 gauge shotguns chambered for 3 1/2 inch shells. Do not use it in a gun with a shorter chamber. A 1 5/8 ounce steel load at this speed produces heavy recoil. A gas-operated semi-auto, a good recoil pad and a well-fitted stock make a long morning in the blind more comfortable. Many hunters save 3 1/2 inch shells for geese and use 3 inch loads for ducks.
Legal Notes
Federal rules require non-toxic shot for migratory waterfowl hunting across the United States, and steel is the most common non-toxic option. Many states also require non-toxic shot on certain public lands and wildlife areas for other game. Always check your state regulations, bag limits and any plug requirements before you hunt.
Storage and Care
Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original boxes. Steel loads used in the blind often get wet; let them dry before storing, and discard any shells with swollen or damaged hulls.
