Description
The Fiocchi 410VIP9 VIP 410 Bore shell, item 410VIP9, is a 410 bore, 2-1/2 inch target load carrying 1/2 oz of #9 lead shot at a rated 1250 fps. It belongs to Fiocchi’s VIP family, the company’s competition target line.
Fiocchi 410VIP9 VIP 410 Bore Overview
For pure skeet, #9 shot is the traditional 410 choice. It packs the most pellets into the half-ounce charge, which helps fill the gaps that make 410 skeet so challenging. The tradeoff is less energy per pellet, so #9 shines on close presentations such as the high house and low house birds at station 8 and the incoming targets at the near stations. Fiocchi VIP shells use competition-grade components to keep the pattern as even as possible, and the 1,250 fps rated speed helps keep the shot charge together on its way to the target.
Shot Size and Pattern
Number 9 is the smallest common target shot size. It puts the most pellets in the air for a given payload, producing a very dense pattern that excels at short-range skeet and close incoming targets. At longer distances the light pellets lose energy quickly, so a larger size is a better choice for far presentations. Pattern your gun on paper at the distances you shoot most, and match your choke to the target: open chokes for close stations, tighter chokes for longer yardage.
Payload and Recoil
The 410 bore is the smallest common shotgun, and its 1/2 ounce target payload carries far fewer pellets than a 20 or 12 gauge shell. That makes it the most demanding gun on the skeet field and a true test of pointing. Recoil is very light, which makes it popular with young shooters, though its thin pattern can make learning harder than with a 20 gauge. At a rated 1250 fps this is a fast target load.
The higher speed shortens the lead you need on crossing and quartering targets, while adding some recoil compared with slower shells of the same weight.
Shotgun Compatibility
Fire this shell only in 410 bore shotguns with a chamber of 2-1/2 inches or longer. It runs in break-action and pump guns without concern, and most gas-operated semi-autos cycle it reliably. Some inertia-driven and older recoil-operated designs prefer heavier loads, so test a box in your gun before match day. Never place a shell in a gun of a different gauge; a smaller shell can slip into a larger barrel and cause a dangerous obstruction.
Practice and Competition
This is a target and competition load. It is well suited to registered and casual skeet, sub-gauge sporting clays and five-stand. Many hunters also use similar lead loads on doves and other small upland birds, but check your state regulations for legal shot types, and remember that lead shot is prohibited for waterfowl.
Consistency and Value
410 target shells cost more per round than 12 or 20 gauge practice loads, and there is less margin for error with the small payload. That is where a premium load earns its price: consistent components help the limited pellet count arrive in an even pattern. Buying a case of one lot keeps your results consistent through the season.
Storage and Care
Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original boxes. Heat and humidity can affect powder and primers over time, and crushed or split hulls should never be fired. Rotate older boxes forward so they get used first.
