Fiocchi 38 Special 130gr FMJ Range Dynamics – Reliable 50 Round Box

Description

The Fiocchi 38 Special 130gr FMJ load, item 38A, is a 50 round box of 38 Special ammunition from the Fiocchi Range Dynamics line, loaded with a 130 grain full metal jacket (fmj) bullet rated at 950 fps. It was previously sold under the Shooting Dynamics pistol name, which is how some distributors still list it.

Fiocchi 38 Special 130gr FMJ Overview

The 38 Special is one of the most forgiving handgun cartridges ever made, and this load leans into that. A 130 grain bullet at about 950 fps is a standard-pressure practice load that recoils gently, even from lightweight revolvers. That makes it ideal for new shooters, for long training sessions and for working on trigger control and reloads without the fatigue of heavier ammunition. Fiocchi has loaded ammunition since 1876, and its US production in Ozark, Missouri supplies much of the brand’s American line, including this practice round.

Intended Use

This is range and training ammunition. Full metal jacket bullets do not expand, so they are a poor choice for self-defense or hunting, where they can over-penetrate. Use this load to build skill, break in a new firearm and confirm function, then carry or hunt with a load designed for that purpose.

Bullet and Ballistics

The 130 grain full metal jacket is a round-nose target bullet. It feeds easily from speed loaders and moon clips, leaves clean holes in paper and holds a consistent point of impact at typical handgun ranges. The jacket also reduces lead fouling in the forcing cone compared with plain lead bullets. Velocity will vary with barrel length and cylinder gap, so expect a little less speed from a snub-nose revolver than from a 4 or 6 inch gun.

Firearm Compatibility

This ammunition is for firearms chambered in 38 Special, and it can also be fired safely in any revolver or lever-action rifle chambered for 357 Magnum. That makes it a cheap way for a 357 Magnum revolver owner to practice. Shooting large volumes of the shorter 38 case in a 357 chamber can leave a carbon ring, so scrub the chambers before switching back to magnum loads. Never fire 357 Magnum ammunition in a gun chambered only for 38 Special.

Reliability and Testing

Factory ammunition from an established maker is held to consistent standards, but every firearm is a little different. Shoot at least a box through your gun before you rely on any load, and watch for clean primer strikes, smooth feeding and positive extraction. If you shoot more than one load, note where each one prints at your usual distance so you can adjust your sights or holds.

Recoil and Shootability

Recoil is light in medium and large frame revolvers and very manageable in compact carry revolvers. That is the main appeal of this load: you can shoot a full box in a session without a sore hand, which builds better habits than a few cylinders of heavy ammunition. Hearing protection is still essential, especially at indoor ranges.

Storage and Care

Store ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box, away from solvents and lubricants that can contaminate primers. Inspect rounds for dents, loose bullets or corrosion before loading, and set aside anything that looks damaged.
