Description
The Fiocchi 12SD1X8 Shooting Dynamics 12ga shell, item 12SD1X8, is a 12 gauge, 2-3/4 inch target load carrying 1 oz of #8 lead shot at a rated 1250 fps. It pairs the denser pattern of #8 shot with the higher speed of Fiocchi’s fast 1 ounce loads.
Fiocchi 12SD1X8 Shooting Dynamics 12ga Overview
Most shooters think of #8 shot for close targets and 7.5 for distance. This shell splits the difference by pushing a 1 ounce charge of 8s at a quick 1,250 fps. The extra speed helps the smaller pellets reach mid-range targets with authority, while the larger pellet count keeps the pattern dense. Recoil stays moderate thanks to the 1 ounce payload. Fiocchi assembles Shooting Dynamics shells in the USA with chilled lead shot, cushioned wads and clean-burning powder, aiming for dependable practice ammunition at a price that encourages regular range time.
Shot Size and Pattern
Number 8 shot is slightly smaller than 7.5, so the same payload carries more pellets. That denser pattern is an advantage on close and mid-range targets such as skeet, five-stand and the near stations of a sporting course, though each pellet carries a little less energy at long range. Pattern your gun on paper at the distances you shoot most, and match your choke to the target: open chokes for close stations, tighter chokes for longer trap yardage.
Payload and Recoil
A 1 ounce payload is a popular middle ground. It carries enough pellets for a full pattern on most targets while recoiling noticeably less than a 1 1/8 ounce shell, which is why many experienced shooters have moved to it for practice and competition. At a rated 1250 fps this is a fast target load. The higher speed shortens the lead you need on crossing and quartering targets, while adding some recoil compared with slower shells of the same weight.
Shotgun Compatibility
Fire this shell only in 12 gauge shotguns with a chamber of 2-3/4 inches or longer. It runs in break-action and pump guns without concern, and most gas-operated semi-autos cycle it reliably. Some inertia-driven and older recoil-operated designs prefer heavier loads, so test a box in your gun before match day. Never place a shell in a gun of a different gauge; a 20 gauge shell can slip past the chamber of a 12 gauge barrel and cause a dangerous obstruction.
Practice and Competition
This is a target and training load. It is well suited to sporting clays with fast quartering targets, skeet doubles, five-stand and 16-yard trap. Many hunters also use similar lead loads on doves and other small upland birds, but check your state regulations for legal shot types, and remember that lead shot is prohibited for waterfowl.
Consistency and Value
Because these shells are priced for volume, it is practical to buy a case and shoot them all season. Many shooters keep this fast #8 load for close and mid stations and its 7.5 sibling for long targets, keeping both on the same payload and speed so the feel never changes.
Storage and Care
Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original boxes. Heat and humidity can affect powder and primers over time, and crushed or split hulls should never be fired. Rotate older boxes forward so they get used first.
