Description
The Fiocchi 12SD1H9 Shooting Dynamics 12ga shell, item 12SD1H9, is a 12 gauge, 2-3/4 inch target load carrying 1 oz of #9 lead shot at a rated 1200 fps. Fiocchi groups it with its Exacta Heavy loads, pairing a 1 ounce charge with a standard 1,200 fps target speed.
Fiocchi 12SD1H9 Shooting Dynamics 12ga Overview
Skeet targets are thrown close and fast, and the shooter rarely needs long-range pellet energy. What matters is a dense, even pattern that leaves no gaps. Number 9 shot delivers exactly that, packing more pellets into a 1 ounce charge than larger shot sizes can. On the skeet field it is the traditional choice, and many sporting clays shooters keep a box handy for close teal and rabbit presentations. Fiocchi loads these Shooting Dynamics shells in the USA with chilled lead shot, cushioned wads and clean-burning powder, and prices them for high-volume practice.
Shot Size and Pattern
Number 9 is the smallest common target shot size. It puts the most pellets in the air for a given payload, producing a very dense pattern that excels at short-range skeet and close incoming targets. At longer distances the light pellets lose energy quickly, so step up to 7.5s for far presentations. Pattern your gun on paper at the distances you shoot most, and match your choke to the target: open chokes for close stations, tighter chokes for longer trap yardage.
Payload and Recoil
A 1 ounce payload is a popular middle ground. It carries enough pellets for a full pattern on most targets while recoiling noticeably less than a 1 1/8 ounce shell, which is why many experienced shooters have moved to it for practice and competition. At a rated 1200 fps this is a standard target velocity. It balances pattern quality, recoil and reliable function in most semi-automatic shotguns.
Shotgun Compatibility
Fire this shell only in 12 gauge shotguns with a chamber of 2-3/4 inches or longer. It runs in break-action and pump guns without concern, and most gas-operated semi-autos cycle it reliably. Some inertia-driven and older recoil-operated designs prefer heavier loads, so test a box in your gun before match day. Never place a shell in a gun of a different gauge; a 20 gauge shell can slip past the chamber of a 12 gauge barrel and cause a dangerous obstruction.
Practice and Competition
This is a target and training load. It is well suited to American and international-style skeet, close-range sporting presentations and five-stand stations where targets are inside about 25 yards. Many hunters also use similar lead loads on doves and other small upland birds, but check your state regulations for legal shot types, and remember that lead shot is prohibited for waterfowl.
Consistency and Value
For skeet shooters who go through hundreds of shells a month, price per box matters. Shooting Dynamics keeps cost down without moving to poorly patterning bargain shells. Pair a case of these with a faster 7.5 load for longer stations, such as the outgoing targets from the high house at station one, and you are covered for most club shoots.
Storage and Care
Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original boxes. Heat and humidity can affect powder and primers over time, and crushed or split hulls should never be fired. Rotate older boxes forward so they get used first.
