Smoothbore Accuracy with the TruBall System
The Federal Premium TruBall rifled slug is designed to make a smoothbore slug gun more accurate. Federal states it is capable of groups as tight as 1.4 inches at 50 yards.
The TruBall system uses a plastic ball between the wad and the hollow point slug. It locks the components together and centers the slug in the barrel, which promotes clean separation after the slug leaves the muzzle for better accuracy and downrange energy.

Slug Hunting Tips
Use Federal TruBall 3in Slug 12ga PB131 RS shells only in shotguns chambered for 3 inch 12 gauge shells or longer.
Rifled slugs like this one are designed for smooth bore barrels; check your barrel type before buying.
Zero your slug gun with this exact load, ideally from a rest at 50 yards, then confirm at the longest distance you plan to shoot.
Check your state regulations for slug hunting zones and seasons.
Federal TruBall 3in Slug 12ga PB131 RS ammo is a dependable choice for deer and big game hunters using a smooth bore slug gun.
Getting the most from a slug gun
Sights or a scope make a big difference with slugs. Bead sights work at short range, but rifle-style sights, a red dot or a low-power scope help you place shots more precisely at 50 to 75 yards.
Accuracy tips
Let the barrel cool between groups when sighting in, since a hot barrel can shift point of impact. Shoot from a solid rest, and try a few different slug loads to see which one your shotgun prefers.
Storage and care
Store Federal TruBall 3in Slug 12ga PB131 RS shells in a cool, dry place in their original box. Clean your barrel after sighting in, since lead and plastic fouling can affect accuracy over time.
Rifled slugs versus sabot slugs
Rifled slugs like this one are made for smooth bore barrels, while sabot slugs are designed for fully rifled barrels. Using the slug type that matches your barrel gives you the best accuracy.
Reading the box
The box lists the gauge, shell length, payload, shot size and muzzle velocity. Always match the gauge and shell length to your shotgun’s chamber, which is usually stamped on the barrel. Never fire a shell that is longer than the chamber.
About the TruBall Rifled Slug line
Federal TruBall 3in Slug 12ga PB131 RS is part of Federal’s TruBall Rifled Slug family, which covers several shot sizes and payloads so you can match the load to your gun and the job at hand. Federal publishes the specifications for each load, so you can compare options before you buy.
Buying the right amount
When you find a load that performs well in your shotgun, buy enough for practice and the full season at the same time. Shells from the same lot tend to perform the same, which keeps your results consistent from the first shot to the last.
Why choose the 3 inch TruBall
The 3 inch hull lets Federal push the same 1 ounce TruBall slug to about 1700 feet per second, compared with about 1600 feet per second for the 2-3/4 inch version. That extra speed flattens the trajectory a little for shots across fields and food plots, as long as your shotgun is chambered for 3 inch shells.
