Description
Federal Shorty 12ga SH1298 shotshells are Federal Shorty Shotshells loads. Each 1-3/4 inch 12 gauge shell carries 15/16 oz of lead number 8 shot at a published muzzle velocity of about 1145 feet per second. Each box holds 10 rounds.
Small Shells, Similar Performance
Federal Shorty shotshells are just 1-3/4 inches long, yet Federal says they offer similar patterns, energy and accuracy to full-size counterparts.
Shorty shells come in 8 shot, number 4 buck and rifled slug loads, and they are a fun option at the range. Because they are so short, some shotguns need an adapter to feed them reliably.

Shooting Tips
Use Federal Shorty 12ga SH1298 shells only in 12 gauge shotguns that can safely chamber them; check your owner’s manual.
Some pump-action shotguns need an adapter to feed 1-3/4 inch shells reliably; semi-automatic shotguns may not cycle them.
Always wear eye and ear protection when shooting.
Pattern or zero your shotgun with this exact load before relying on it.
Federal Shorty 12ga SH1298 ammo is a fun choice for shooters who want a fun, low-recoil shell at the range.
Why try mini shells
Short shells let you load more rounds in a tube magazine than full-length shells. They also tend to recoil less, which makes a long range session more comfortable.
Compatibility
Not every shotgun feeds short shells reliably. Before buying a large supply, test a few rounds in your gun to make sure they load, fire and eject without trouble.
Storage and care
Store Federal Shorty 12ga SH1298 shells in a cool, dry place in their original box, and clean your shotgun after each range trip.
Where mini shells fit
Short shells are popular for casual range days, plinking and getting newer shooters comfortable with a 12 gauge. Because each shell is lighter and shorter, a box takes up less room in a range bag than full-length shells.
Testing before you rely on them
Shoot several rounds through your shotgun to confirm they feed, fire and eject reliably. Pattern or zero the load at the distances you plan to shoot, since short shells can print differently than full-length loads from the same barrel.
Safe handling
Always treat every shotgun as loaded, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
Reading the box
The box lists the gauge, shell length, payload, shot size and muzzle velocity. Always match the gauge and shell length to your shotgun’s chamber, which is usually stamped on the barrel. Never fire a shell that is longer than the chamber.
About the Shorty Shotshells line
Federal Shorty 12ga SH1298 is part of Federal’s Shorty Shotshells family, which covers several shot sizes and payloads so you can match the load to your gun and the job at hand. Federal publishes the specifications for each load, so you can compare options before you buy.
Buying the right amount
When you find a load that performs well in your shotgun, buy enough for practice and the full season at the same time. Shells from the same lot tend to perform the same, which keeps your results consistent from the first shot to the last.
