Federal’s Flagship Clay Target Load

High Over All was designed with one goal: consistent, record setting patterns. Federal uses hard, high antimony lead pellets that resist deformation, so more of them stay round and deliver energy downrange. Round pellets mean fewer fliers and more even patterns, which shows up as smoked targets instead of chips.

The wad improves patterns and cushions the payload at ignition, helping keep recoil manageable through long tournaments. That matters when you shoot hundreds of targets over a weekend and need your last station to feel like your first.

A solid brass head adds strength and smooth extraction, and the plastic hull design makes reloading easier and allows more reloads per shell. Competitive shooters who reload appreciate a hull that holds up to repeated use.

Field Notes and Competition Tips

Use Federal High Over All 12ga 8 Shot shells for registered trap singles and doubles, skeet and sporting clays. #8 shot is a popular all around choice for 16 yard trap and mid range clays presentations.

Pattern your shotgun with this load and your favorite chokes. Knowing exactly how your gun prints helps you choose chokes station by station and builds confidence on the line.

If you reload, save your hulls and inspect them after each use. High Over All hulls are designed for reloading, and consistent hulls help produce consistent reloads.

Store cases in a cool, dry place off the floor. Keep a log of lot numbers if you notice any difference in feel or performance between cases.

If you compete at a high level and want Federal’s best clay target load, Federal High Over All 12ga 8 Shot shells are a superb choice. Pair them with a quality shell pouch for the line.

Serious competitors often buy Federal High Over All 12ga 8 Shot shells by the case and stick with a single lot for an entire season. That consistency removes a variable from their game, so changes in scores reflect technique, conditions or equipment rather than ammunition. If you travel to big shoots, bringing your proven lot from home is a common habit among top shooters.

Wear quality eye and ear protection, keep your gun clean between rounds, and take a moment before each post to settle your breathing and focus on the target.

Even shooters who are not yet at the top of their class benefit from premium shells. A load that breaks targets cleanly gives honest feedback: a smoked target means you were on it, while a chip means you were on the edge of the pattern. That clear feedback helps you make small adjustments to your hold points and lead pictures, and those adjustments add up to higher scores over a season.
