A Competition Favorite With Paper Hull Tradition

Many serious clay shooters love paper hulls for their traditional feel and the way they burn clean when fired. Federal’s Gold Medal Paper line pairs that classic hull with a brass head for smooth cycling and extraction, so the shells run reliably in modern semi-autos and over and unders alike.

Extra high antimony lead shot is engineered for the best blend of hardness and density. Hard pellets resist deformation, so more of them stay round and fly true, giving even patterns with fewer fliers. That matters at trap, where clean, consistent breaks build scores.

The two piece wad uses Federal’s SoftCell technology, designed to reduce perceived recoil and produce more uniform patterns than many one piece designs. A 1 ounce payload at 1,330 fps keeps recoil light while delivering plenty of speed to the target.

Field Notes and Trap Tips

Use Federal Gold Medal Paper 12ga Trap loads for American trap singles, handicap and doubles, as well as longer sporting clays stations where #7.5 shot carries extra energy. The fast 1 ounce load gives a quick shot string with mild recoil.

Pattern your gun with this load to see how it prints with your preferred choke. Paper hull loads may pattern slightly differently than plastic hull loads, so do not assume your old choke selection is perfect.

Paper hulls are sensitive to moisture. Keep boxes dry, avoid leaving them in damp vehicles, and store them in a cool, dry place between shoots.

If you reload, Gold Medal Paper hulls can be reloaded, though paper hulls typically last fewer loading cycles than plastic. Inspect each hull for wear before reuse.

If you shoot trap and want the classic paper hull experience with modern competition performance, Federal Gold Medal Paper 12ga Trap loads are a superb choice. Add a quality shell pouch for the line.

For many shooters, part of the appeal of paper hulls is tradition. The sound, scent and feel of a paper shell connect the modern clay sports to their roots, and many clubs still see shooters who swear by paper for their best scores. With Federal Gold Medal Paper 12ga Trap loads, you get that tradition along with a brass head and modern wad technology that keep performance competitive.

Handicap trap shooters often prefer #7.5 shot because the targets are farther away when they break. The extra pellet energy helps chip and break targets cleanly at longer yardage, while the 1 ounce payload keeps recoil comfortable through a full 100 target event. Many shooters carry Federal Gold Medal Paper 12ga Trap loads for handicap and a #8 load for singles.
