A Classic Revolver Bullet Design
The semi wadcutter has been a revolver favorite for generations. Its sharp shoulder cuts a clean, full diameter hole in paper targets, making scoring easy, and it carries a broad flat nose that transfers energy well.
This Federal load adds a hollow point to the semi wadcutter design, so you get the target friendly shape along with a nose built to open up. Federal’s published data shows the bullet holding about 787 feet per second at 100 yards.
The 44 Special runs at modest pressure, which makes it pleasant to shoot in medium and large frame revolvers and an easy way to practice with a 44 Magnum without the full magnum recoil.

Revolver Shooting Tips
Use Federal 44 Special 200gr SWC HP ammo in firearms chambered for 44 Special. It can also be fired in revolvers chambered for 44 Magnum.
If you practice with 44 Special in a 44 Magnum revolver, clean the chambers before switching back to magnum loads so carbon rings do not interfere with chambering.
Work on smooth double action trigger pulls at 7 and 15 yards to build accuracy.
Practice reloads with speedloaders so you can refill the cylinder quickly.
Federal 44 Special 200gr SWC HP ammo is a proven choice for 44 Special revolver owners, 44 Magnum shooters who want lighter practice loads, and anyone who enjoys accurate, moderate recoil target shooting.
The 44 Special dates back to 1907 and has long been admired for its accuracy and mild manners. It was the parent case of the 44 Magnum, and it remains popular with revolver enthusiasts who appreciate a big bore cartridge that is pleasant to shoot. Federal 44 Special 200gr SWC HP ammo produces roughly 335 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle by standard calculation.
Compact 44 Special revolvers, such as the Charter Arms Bulldog, are popular for carry and home use because they offer a large bore in a manageable package. Practicing with Federal 44 Special 200gr SWC HP rounds helps you get comfortable with your revolver at realistic distances.
The semi wadcutter bullet also makes this a great choice for paper target shooting. The clean cut holes are easy to see and score, which helps you track your progress.
Store your ammunition in a cool, dry place in its original box. Buying a few boxes of Federal 44 Special 200gr SWC HP from the same lot keeps your point of impact consistent from range trip to range trip.
Clean your revolver after each session, paying special attention to the forcing cone and the front of the cylinder, where lead and carbon build up fastest.
For new revolver shooters, start at 5 to 7 yards with single action shots to learn the sights, then move to double action as your confidence grows.
