Description
The Federal 12 ga 1oz Shorty Rifled Slug load is built for hunters who want dependable patterns on deer and hogs. Federal loads 1 oz of Shorty Rifled Slug lead shot to a rated 1200 feet per second in a 1-3/4 in 12 Gauge shell. Federal Shorty Shells pack a full-weight rifled slug into a compact 1 3/4 inch hull. The shorter shell lets many pump shotguns hold more rounds in the magazine, and it produces noticeably less recoil than a standard 2 3/4 inch slug load.
Why Choose the Federal 12 ga 1oz Shorty Rifled Slug
- 1 oz (438 grain) rifled slug
- Rated 1200 fps muzzle velocity
- 1-3/4 in 12 Gauge hull
- Compact 1-3/4 inch shell for increased magazine capacity

Built for Deer Hunting
- Compact shell increases magazine capacity
- Reduced recoil compared with full-length slugs
- Full ounce rifled slug for smoothbore barrels
- Great for home defense and short-range deer hunting
Patterning your shotgun with a new load is the best way to know how it performs. Shoot a few rounds at a large sheet of paper at 25 to 35 yards with the choke you plan to hunt with, and check that the densest part of the pattern lines up with your point of aim. Trying a tighter or more open choke can make a real difference on fast, close birds.
Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original box, and keep loads with different shot sizes separated so you always grab the right shell in the field. Buying enough from the same lot for the whole season keeps velocity and pattern consistent from one hunt to the next, so your practice carries over to the field.
Choosing 12 Ga Deer Slugs
When comparing 12 ga deer slugs, shooters weigh accuracy, recoil and how many rounds their shotgun can hold. Federal 12 ga shorty shells answer with a full-weight rifled slug in a compact hull that fits more rounds in many pump-action magazines while kicking noticeably less than full-length loads.

Why Choose Federal 12 Gauge Shotshells
Shorty Shells were designed for shooters who want more rounds on board and less recoil. In many pump-action shotguns, the 1 3/4 inch shell adds several rounds of capacity, and the lighter recoil makes follow-up shots faster.
The full one-ounce rifled slug still delivers heavy energy at close range, making it a practical choice for deer inside typical woods distances and for home defense.
Federal Premium has made ammunition in Anoka, Minnesota since 1922 and is one of the most trusted names in shotgun ammunition. Its Shorty Shells line brings compact, lower-recoil loads to 12 gauge shooters, and federal 12 ga ammo from this line is popular with pump-action owners who want more capacity.
Federal 12 gauge Shorty rifled slugs suit owners of pump shotguns who want extra capacity and lower recoil. Some shotguns require an adapter to feed Shorty Shells reliably, so check compatibility with your firearm. Always confirm your shotgun is chambered for 1-3/4 in 12 Gauge shells, wear eye and ear protection, and follow all federal, state and local hunting laws.
