Description
The Escort Optima 12ga Aluminum Over Under is a lightweight 12 gauge break-action from Hatsan’s Escort line, built in Turkey. Model HEOD12280A01 pairs a silver engraved aluminum receiver with 28 inch barrels, 3 inch chambers, extractors and select Turkish walnut, at a price well under most imported over/unders.
Escort Optima 12ga Aluminum Over Under Overview
Escort introduced the updated Optima for 2025 in 12, 20 and 28 gauge. This 12 gauge uses the aluminum receiver, which brings the weight down to about 6.2 pounds per Escort. It has a single selective trigger, a sliding tang safety, a 7x7mm ventilated rib with a fiber optic front sight, and Beretta/Benelli Mobil-pattern choke tubes. Overall length is 44.9 inches.
Light Weight, Real Recoil
A 6.2 pound 12 gauge carries beautifully on long upland walks, but physics still applies. With heavy 3 inch loads it will kick noticeably harder than a 7.5 pound steel-receiver gun. For clays and most bird hunting, 1 ounce and 1-1/8 ounce 2-3/4 inch loads are the sweet spot and far more pleasant. Save magnum shells for when you truly need them.
Extractors, Not Ejectors
The aluminum-receiver Optima uses extractors, which lift the hulls so you can pluck them out by hand. That is slower than ejectors for fast reloads on a sporting clays course, but it keeps empties out of the grass, which many hunters and reloaders prefer. If you want ejectors, the 12 gauge steel-receiver Optima offers them.
Easy Adjust Action
Hatsan’s “Easy Adjust” action lets you tune how much force it takes to open the gun, so a new, stiff action can be eased and a worn one tightened. It is a useful feature on an affordable gun, because the hinge is where inexpensive break-actions tend to loosen first.
Chokes and Patterns
The Mobil-pattern threading means flush and extended tubes from Beretta, Benelli and aftermarket makers fit. Check the box for the specific tubes included with your gun. Improved cylinder or modified suits most upland and skeet work, while modified or improved modified helps on longer crossing targets. Confirm a tube is marked steel-safe before shooting steel shot.
Value and Durability
Aluminum receivers are lighter but generally wear faster than steel over tens of thousands of rounds, and Turkish over/unders do not hold resale value the way Beretta or Browning guns do. For a hunter who shoots a few boxes a season or a new clay shooter, that trade is easy to accept at this price. Keep the hinge pin and monoblock lightly greased.
State Laws and Ownership
A two-shot break-action shotgun is legal to own in every state, and it is about the least regulated firearm you can buy. Some states and cities still require a purchase permit, firearm ID card or waiting period for any gun, including New Jersey, New York City, Illinois and Massachusetts. Pennsylvania buyers go through the PICS check at the dealer counter. Hunters should check state rules on non-toxic shot for waterfowl and on hunter education before heading afield.
