Description
The EOTech 552 Holographic Weapon Sight is a Model 552 holographic weapon sight with a 68 MOA ring with a 1 MOA center dot in red, set in a black housing. It is the kind of sight you put on a rifle you plan to depend on, with fast target pickup, both eyes open shooting, and a reticle that stays sharp from contact distance out to the edge of carbine range.
EOTech 552 Holographic Weapon Sight Overview
A65 runs on two AA batteries. The 552 uses the long, full-size housing that has served on duty and military rifles for decades, with the battery compartment running sideways under the front of the hood. It also has 10 night vision settings that work with Gen I through III+ night vision devices, on top of 20 daylight settings. 5 oz, and it is rated water resistant to 33 ft (10 m). Battery life is about 2,500 hours on lithium AA batteries (about 2,200 on alkaline) at brightness setting 12.
Why Holographic Is Different
A standard red dot reflects an LED off a coated lens. An EOTech uses a laser diode to light a hologram of the reticle that is recorded inside the window. The result is a crisp reticle that looks like it sits out at the target, and it stays clean for many shooters with astigmatism who see a red dot as a starburst. If the window gets cracked or partly covered with mud, the remaining glass still shows the whole reticle.
The Reticle
This model uses a 68 MOA ring with a 1 MOA center dot. The big ring is fast to find at close range, and the small dot gives you a precise aiming point when the target is farther away. The reticle is shown in red. Windage and elevation adjust in 0.5 MOA clicks.
Controls and Mounting
You control brightness with push buttons on the rear of the housing. The sight attaches with a cross-bolt base with a thumb nut that fits 1 in Weaver and MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rails. AA batteries are easy to find anywhere, which is one reason the full-size models stay popular with people who train hard and shoot often.
Built for Hard Use
EOTech designs and builds its HWS sights in Michigan, and the line has served with U.S. military and law enforcement units for years. The housing is a protective hood over the window, the internal optics are fog resistant, and the sight is rated to work from -40 to 140 degrees F. Unlimited eye relief means you can mount it anywhere on the rail that suits your stance.
Adding a Magnifier
EOTech HWS sights pair well with the EOTech G33, G43 and G45 magnifiers. A magnifier mounted behind the sight gives you 3x or 5x for identifying targets and making longer shots, then swings out of the way when you need the unmagnified view again. Because the reticle is a hologram, it stays sharp through the magnifier instead of turning into a blurry blob.
Zeroing Tips
Most shooters zero an AR-15 carbine at 50 or 100 yards with the center dot. Start close at about 25 yards to get on paper, then move back and fine tune. Each click moves point of impact about half an inch at 100 yards, so small corrections are easy to make. Confirm zero with the ammunition you plan to carry.
