DoubleTap 500 SW 455gr Equalizer – Proven Two-Projectile Magnum Ammo, 20 Rounds

Description

The DoubleTap 500 SW 455gr Equalizer load puts two projectiles in every 500 S&W Magnum cartridge. DoubleTap stacks a 275 grain hollow point over a 180 grain hardcast solid ball for a combined 455 grain payload, so a single trigger press delivers two hits on target. DoubleTap reports 21.5 inches of penetration with 1.12 inch expansion from the lead projectile and 24 inches of penetration from the solid behind it. Each box holds 20 rounds.

How the Equalizer Concept Works

Most defensive and hunting loads ask one bullet to do two jobs: expand reliably and penetrate deeply. Those goals often pull in opposite directions. The Equalizer splits them between two projectiles. The 275 grain hollow point leads the way and opens wide, while the 180 grain hardcast solid follows and drives straight through without expanding.

In ordnance gelatin, DoubleTap reports that the hollow point penetrates about 21.5 inches and expands to roughly 1.12 inches, while the solid reaches about 24 inches with no expansion. The company notes that this is more penetration than a 180 grain .30-06 load, which gives a sense of how much energy the 500 S&W Magnum carries.

That combination makes this a serious choice for defense against large, dangerous animals. When a single well-placed shot must stop a bear or a charging hog, two projectiles creating two wound paths add a meaningful margin. It also gives handgun hunters a unique option for big game at close range.

DoubleTap ammunition is known for purpose-built loads and careful quality control. The DoubleTap 500 SW 455gr Equalizer is a specialized round for big-bore revolver owners who want maximum effect from every shot.

Field Notes and Carry Tips

Pattern the load on paper before relying on it. Fire at 7, 15, and 25 yards to see how far apart the two projectiles land from your revolver. Knowing the spread helps you understand where both hits will go at the distances you are likely to face.

Expect heavy recoil. The 500 S&W Magnum is one of the most powerful production revolver cartridges, and a firm two-hand grip is essential. Practice with full-power loads so you can recover quickly for a follow-up shot.

Check for bullet jump after firing several rounds. Heavy recoil can pull projectiles forward in the remaining chambers, so inspect unfired cartridges and replace any that have moved before carrying them in the field.

Carry the revolver in a chest rig or sturdy holster when you are in the backcountry, and practice drawing from it while wearing a pack. A big-bore revolver is only useful if you can get it into action quickly, and regular dry-fire practice with snap caps builds that speed without the recoil of live ammunition.

DoubleTap does not recommend Equalizer loads for suppressor use. Wear quality hearing and eye protection, and store spare boxes in a cool, dry place away from solvents and lubricants.

This load is a strong fit for 500 S&W Magnum owners who carry in bear and big game country and want every shot to count twice. It also suits handgun hunters looking for deep penetration on large animals at close range. If you want 500 SW Magnum ammo built for maximum stopping effect, the DoubleTap 500 SW 455gr Equalizer is a proven choice.

Prefer a single heavy hardcast bullet? The CorBon 500 SW 440gr Hard Cast is a deep-penetrating alternative, and more details are available from DoubleTap Ammunition.
