Why a Hardcast Solid for the Woods

Hollow points are designed to expand and slow down quickly. That works well against people, but large animals with thick hide, heavy muscle, and dense bone call for a different approach. A hardcast solid does not expand. It holds its shape and keeps driving forward, which gives it the deep penetration needed to reach vital organs on tough game.

The wide flat nose is an important part of that design. Instead of a pointed or round nose that can slip through tissue, the broad flat face cuts a full-diameter wound channel all the way through. The gas check on the base protects the bullet from hot powder gas and helps reduce leading at magnum velocities.

The 327 Federal Magnum is often underestimated. It delivers flat trajectories and strong velocity from compact revolvers, and many six-shot guns hold one more round than a comparable .38 or .357. Loaded with a 120 grain hardcast solid, it becomes a practical choice for hiking, fishing, and working outdoors where a lighter revolver is easier to carry all day.

DoubleTap ammunition is known for careful quality control and purpose-built loads. The DoubleTap 327 Federal 120gr Hardcast is a specialized round for outdoor carry and hunting rather than a range load, and it gives 327 owners a serious option for the woods.

Field Notes and Carry Tips

Fire a few cylinders of this 327 Federal ammo before carrying it. Heavy hardcast loads can shift point of impact compared with lighter practice rounds, and you want to know where they hit at 10 to 25 yards.

Check for bullet jump in lightweight revolvers. After firing several rounds, inspect the remaining cartridges and replace any that have moved forward in the case before you carry them.

Hardcast bullets penetrate deeply and can pass completely through game. Know what is behind your target, and practice shot placement so the bullet’s penetration works for you, not against you.

Pair this load with a speed loader or speed strip so you can reload quickly in the field. Store spare boxes in a cool, dry place away from solvents and lubricants.

This load is a strong fit for hikers, anglers, hunters, and ranchers who carry a 327 Federal revolver or lever gun in the outdoors. It also suits handgun hunters who want deep penetration on deer and hogs. If you want 327 Federal hunting ammo that penetrates deeply and stays together, the DoubleTap 327 Federal 120gr Hardcast is a proven choice.

Want a round for snakes too? The DoubleTap 327 Federal SnakeShot pairs well with this load, and more details are available from DoubleTap Ammunition.
