Description

Diamondback DB15 6.5 Grendel rifle with 18 inch barrel, 15 inch M-Lok handguard and Magpul CTR stock

The Diamondback DB15 6.5 Grendel takes the familiar AR-15 platform and chambers it in a cartridge that genuinely changes what the rifle can do. Where 5.56 runs out of energy past a few hundred yards, 6.5 Grendel keeps a high-BC bullet moving, and an 18-inch mid-length barrel is close to the sweet spot for wringing velocity out of it.

This is the Black Gold series build, so it arrives with a 15-inch free-float M-Lok handguard, a Magpul CTR adjustable stock and a Magpul MOE-K2 grip rather than the mil-spec furniture most entry rifles ship with.

Diamondback DB15 6.5 Grendel Barrel and Gas System

The 18-inch barrel is 4150 chrome moly with a 1:8 twist, which stabilizes the long 120 to 129 grain bullets that make 6.5 Grendel worth shooting. A mid-length gas system softens the impulse compared to a carbine port position and is easier on the bolt and extractor over a long service life.

Out front is a flash hider, and the barrel sits inside a 15-inch free-float M-Lok rail that never touches the barrel. Free-floating is the single biggest accuracy variable on an AR, and it also gives you a long run of M-Lok slots for a bipod, light or hand stop.

Receiver, Furniture and Controls

Both receivers are 7075-T6 aluminum finished in black, with the Black Gold series lower giving the rifle its distinctive look. The receiver’s full-length Picatinny top rail lines up with the handguard rail, so a scope, red dot or magnifier all mount without a riser mismatch.

The Magpul CTR stock adjusts for length of pull and locks solidly against wobble, which matters when you are shooting a precision-capable cartridge off a bag. The MOE-K2 grip has a steeper angle than the standard MOE, which is more comfortable behind an optic and on a bench.

Why 6.5 Grendel on an AR-15

6.5 Grendel was designed from the start to fit an AR-15 magazine well and bolt face, so you get a meaningful ballistic upgrade without stepping up to an AR-10 and its extra weight. A 123 grain bullet leaves an 18-inch barrel around 2,550 feet per second and stays supersonic well past 1,000 yards.

For hunters, that translates to an AR that is legal and effective on deer and hogs in most states, with far more downrange energy than 5.56 delivers. For target shooters, it means a rifle that holds its own at distance on a standard lower.

Ammunition and Magazines

Factory 6.5 Grendel is loaded by Hornady, Federal, Barnes, Wolf and Alexander Arms among others, in weights from 100 to 129 grains. Steel-case practice ammunition keeps range days cheap, while 123 grain match and 120 grain hunting loads are what most owners settle on for serious work.

Magazines are Grendel-specific, not standard 5.56 bodies, so plan on buying spares in the correct pattern. The rifle ships with a 28-round and a 5-round magazine, which covers both range use and states that cap hunting capacity at five.

Who Should Buy It

This rifle suits the shooter who already owns a 5.56 carbine and wants something with more reach, the hunter looking for a semi-automatic deer and hog rifle, and anyone who wants a mid-range target AR without the bulk and cost of a large-frame build.

It is also a sensible first AR for someone who knows they will shoot past 300 yards. Buying the longer barrel and free-float rail up front costs less than upgrading a carbine later.
