Description
The Derya DY9Z Gray 9mm is the most understated frame in the range. Gray under a black slide reads almost as a two tone black at any distance, which makes it the choice for someone who wants a break from plain black without announcing it.
The specification is the same everywhere in this family: fifteen plus one in a pistol an inch and a tenth wide, with the optic pocket milled into the slide rather than sold as a plate kit. Stock on this frame is limited.
What the Derya DY9Z Gray 9mm actually is
- A striker fired 9mm Luger micro compact holding 15+1 with the supplied metal magazine.
- A 3.50 inch barrel in a pistol 6.5 inches long, 5 inches tall and 1.10 inches wide, weighing about 20 ounces.
- A gray polymer frame with an accessory rail, under a black optic ready slide with front and rear serrations.
- An RMSc footprint cut machined directly into the slide, so a micro red dot mounts without a plate.
- Three interchangeable backstraps in small, medium and large, supplied in the box.
- Fixed white dot front and white U-notch rear sights, a firing pin block and an anti-drop trigger block.
The trigger on the Derya DY9Z Gray 9mm
- Derya calls it the Second Wind trigger and describes short pre-travel, a defined wall and a crisp break, which is the standard description every maker uses.
- What it actually means in the hand is a trigger better than the price suggests and not as good as a tuned competition unit. That is the right expectation.
- On a micro compact the trigger matters more than on a full size pistol, because there is less weight and less sight radius to hide a poor press.
- Dry practice is the cheapest way to learn any trigger. Confirm the Derya DY9Z Gray 9mm is unloaded, remove the ammunition from the room, and press against a safe backstop.
- A firing pin block and an anti-drop trigger block mean the pistol is drop safe. Neither replaces a holster that covers the trigger guard.

Magazines for the Derya DY9Z Gray 9mm
Derya publishes the DY9Z sheet on its own site if you want the manufacturer view alongside ours: the DY9Z product page carries the same dimensions, trigger and optic cut printed above.
- The Derya DY9Z fifteen round magazine is the correct full capacity spare and the one the advertised 15+1 is based on.
- Glock 43X and 48 pattern magazines also drop in. Ten rounds, and cheap enough to buy several for practice.
- Steel fifteen round conversions such as the Shield Arms S15 are popular in the Glock 43X. Derya does not list them as approved for the DY9Z and using one may affect your warranty, so check with Derya first.
- For ammunition, CCI Blazer Brass 115 grain 9mm is the clean burning practice default.
- Stick to sights built around the RMSc footprint. A larger window dot can overhang the short slide and catch on clothing.
Where gray sits in the range
If the Derya DY9Z Gray 9mm sells through, the closest alternatives are the Flat Dark Earth for something equally restrained, or the black with the silver slide if a two tone appeals.
Every DY9Z is mechanically identical, so nothing about the specification changes with the frame. Magazines, holsters, sights and backstraps all carry across the whole range.
Why the Derya DY9Z Gray 9mm earns its place
- Fifteen rounds at 1.10 inches wide is the specification that made the micro compact class worth revisiting.
- A direct RMSc cut takes a micro red dot with no plate and one less set of fasteners to check.
- Three backstraps means the grip on the Derya DY9Z Gray 9mm can be fitted rather than endured.
- Glock 43X and 48 magazines drop in, so cheap practice magazines sit alongside the factory one.
- Compliance note worth knowing: Derya lists the DY9Z as Maryland compliant, and not California or Massachusetts compliant.
The Derya DY9Z Gray 9mm suits the buyer who wants something other than black without anything loud, and the daily carrier who values capacity in a genuinely small pistol. It shares magazines, holsters, sights and parts with every other DY9Z we list.
It is a micro compact and it recoils like one. Spend the ammunition to learn the grip and fit the backstraps properly before judging it. Every firearm on this page ships to your chosen FFL for transfer and pickup.
What this pistol is not
It is worth being clear about the limits. The Derya DY9Z Gray 9mm is a close range defensive tool, and a 3.5 inch barrel with a short sight radius is not a target setup.
It is also not a beginner’s range gun in the sense that a full size steel nine is. Light pistols are harder to shoot well, and a new shooter learning on one will work harder for the same result.
What it is good at is being present. A pistol that lives on your belt because it is small enough to forget is worth more than a better pistol in a safe, and that is the entire argument for the class.
If the gun is only ever going to the range, buy something larger and enjoy it more. If it is going to be carried, this is the right size and the fifteen rounds are the reason to pick this one over its competitors.
