Who Makes CorBon 458 SOCOM 300gr JHP Hunter
CorBon is a South Dakota ammunition company known for high velocity defensive and hunting loads. It was one of the early names in premium defensive ammunition and is also known for its DPX solid copper loads. Its Hunter line uses premium bullets chosen for penetration and expansion on game.
The 458 SOCOM is an AR-15 big bore cartridge. It uses a standard AR-15 lower and a dedicated upper, firing 45 caliber bullets similar to those of the 45-70 Government. A 300 grain bullet is at the lighter, faster end of the bullet weights used in the cartridge.
That lighter bullet gives CorBon 458 SOCOM 300gr JHP Hunter a flatter trajectory than heavier 400 grain loads, and plenty of energy for hogs and deer at typical woods and brush distances.
The 458 SOCOM was designed in the early 2000s for special operations users who wanted more energy from an M4-sized rifle at short range. It has since become popular with hunters, especially in states that restrict deer hunting to straight-walled or large-bore cartridges, and with hog hunters who value a heavy bullet in a familiar platform.
Specifications and Performance
Retail listings give CorBon 458 SOCOM 300gr JHP Hunter a muzzle velocity of about 1,900 fps and 2,405 ft-lbs of muzzle energy. Your own velocity will depend on barrel length, and short-barrelled 458 SOCOM rifles and pistols will run slower.
The jacketed hollow point is designed to expand reliably at 458 SOCOM velocities, creating a wide wound channel on medium game. For very large or dangerous animals, a heavier bullet or a solid copper design will give deeper penetration.
Because the 458 SOCOM uses a relatively short case, bullet weight has a big effect on velocity. Lighter 250 to 300 grain bullets run noticeably faster than 350 to 400 grain bullets, which is why many hunters choose a 300 grain load for general use. Heavier loads are better reserved for the largest game.

Field Notes
For hog hunting from a stand or with thermal at night, CorBon 458 SOCOM 300gr JHP Hunter is a strong choice inside about 150 yards. With a 100 yard zero, expect a noticeable drop past 150 yards, so practise holds before you hunt.
Check that your AR-15 magazines feed the 458 SOCOM reliably. Many standard magazines work, but dedicated followers and magazines designed for the cartridge are often more dependable.
Recoil is stout for an AR-15. A good muzzle brake or suppressor helps, as does a stock with a solid recoil pad. Make sure your upper, bolt and barrel are specifically rated for 458 SOCOM.
Be aware of your backstop. A 300 grain bullet carries a lot of energy, and hollow points can still pass through animals. Shooting from elevated stands into the ground is the safest arrangement when hunting from a blind or tree stand.
Store ammunition cool and dry. Rifle ammunition requires buyers to be at least 18, and some states add extra rules for ammunition purchases.
