Description
The Citadel Boss-25 CA Compliant is the California legal build of Citadel’s AR pattern 12 gauge. It keeps the 18.75 inch chrome lined barrel, the 5+1 capacity and the familiar AR-15 controls, in a configuration set up to satisfy California’s restrictions.
An AR-15 That Shoots Shotshells
The whole appeal of the Boss-25 is that it feels like a rifle you already know. Safety selector, magazine release, charging handle, pistol grip and adjustable stock all sit exactly where an AR shooter expects them, so there is no new manual of arms to learn.
It runs a gas operated action feeding from detachable box magazines. Reloading is a magazine change rather than thumbing shells into a tube, which is the single biggest practical difference between this and a conventional pump or semi-auto shotgun.
Citadel Boss-25 CA Compliant Barrel and Chokes
The barrel is 18.75 inches and chrome lined. Chrome lining is not cosmetic on a shotgun that will see steel shot and corrosive range conditions; it resists pitting and makes cleaning far easier after a wet day.
Five choke tubes are included, which is generous at this price and lets you set the gun up for anything from close range buckshot to open patterns for clays. Citadel notes that full, improved modified and modified tubes should not be used with slugs, and that full and improved modified should not be used with steel shot.
Furniture and Sights
Overall length is 37.75 inches with a 14 inch length of pull. The synthetic stock and the upper Picatinny rail let you set eye relief and optic height to suit, and flip-up sights come standard so the gun is usable straight out of the box.
The forend carries Picatinny rail sections for a light or a forward grip. A black rubber recoil pad handles the eight pound gun’s share of 12 gauge recoil, and the weight itself does most of the work in soaking up 2 3/4 inch loads.
Ammunition and Break-In
Like every gas operated magazine fed shotgun, the Boss-25 wants full power ammunition while the action beds in. Two and three quarter inch loads in the 1,200 feet per second range and above cycle reliably; the very cheapest promotional target shells often do not generate enough gas to work the bolt consistently until the gun has a few hundred rounds through it.
Once broken in it handles buckshot, slugs and heavier field loads without complaint, and the three inch chamber gives you the option of magnum waterfowl and turkey loads when the pattern calls for them.

Who Should Buy It
This is a home defense and range shotgun for a California buyer who wants magazine fed capacity and AR ergonomics without importing a compliance problem. It also suits new shotgun owners generally, because the controls are the ones most people already know.
Be realistic about the trade-offs. Gas operated magazine fed shotguns are ammunition sensitive and want full power loads, especially during break-in. Eight pounds is heavy for a shotgun, the compliance hardware slows reloads compared with a standard Boss-25, and cheap bulk target loads are the usual cause of cycling problems.
