Cimarron Wyatt Earp Buntline 45 Colt Overview
Cimarron worked from one of the original movie prop guns, with permission from the armorer who supplied many of the film’s firearms, to make this replica. It is built by Pietta in Italy on the 1873 Single Action Army pattern with an Old Model, pre-1896 frame. The barrel, cylinder and grip frame are finished in standard blue, while the frame and hammer are color case hardened. The silver presentation plaque reads Wyatt Earp, Peacekeeper, just like the screen gun.
The Buntline Legend
The story goes that dime novelist Ned Buntline presented long-barreled Colts to Earp and other Dodge City lawmen. Historians have never found solid proof that those guns existed, and many believe the tale was invented decades later. That does not stop the Buntline from being one of the most recognizable revolvers in Western lore. This replica celebrates the legend and the film rather than claiming to copy a documented historical gun.
Shooting a 10-Inch Revolver
The long barrel gives a very long sight radius, which helps precise aiming at the range, and the forward weight keeps muzzle flip low with 45 Colt. It also makes the revolver slow from leather and awkward in a standard holster. Sights are fixed, a groove in the topstrap and a front blade. Use standard-pressure 45 Colt loads only, such as lead cowboy ammunition; heavy +P loads are not for an 1873-pattern revolver.
Display and Collecting
Many owners buy this gun primarily for display alongside a movie poster or other Western film memorabilia, and Cimarron offers a matching walnut display case separately. The silver inlay and color case frame look best under soft light. Keep the gun lightly oiled and handle it with clean hands, because sterling silver tarnishes and color case finishes are thin. Fingerprints left on blued steel can cause rust spots over time.
Operation and Safety
The revolver works like any traditional single action. Bring the hammer to half cock, open the gate, load one chamber at a time and close the gate. Spent cases are pushed out with the ejector rod. The traditional practice is to load five and rest the hammer on the empty sixth chamber. Read the Cimarron manual for handling details specific to your revolver before you shoot it.
Honest Caveats
A 10-inch barrel needs a special holster and is impractical for carry. Price reflects the movie tie-in and the silver plaque more than mechanical upgrades. Fixed sights may not match every load. The silver will need occasional polishing with a jeweler’s cloth, kept away from the blued steel. 45 Colt ammunition costs more than 38 Special, so budget for range sessions.
