Description
The Century Arms AP5 Core is a faithful MP5 pattern pistol built on the original roller-delayed blowback action, and at this price it is the most accessible way into that platform by a considerable margin. Model HG6034ALN runs an 8.9 inch threaded chrome moly vanadium barrel with a 1:9.8 twist, holds 30+1, and comes in at 17.9 inches overall and 5.5 pounds.
Roller-delayed blowback is what separates the Century Arms AP5 Core from the straight-blowback 9mm pistols that look similar. Instead of relying on the sheer mass of the bolt to hold the breech shut, two rollers cam outward into recesses in the trunnion and have to be driven back in before the bolt can move. The result is a softer, slower recoil impulse and a gun that stays remarkably flat for a 9mm carbine-length pistol.
Everything about the fit is right: stamped metal receiver, the correct fixed front sight in its hood, and the rotating drum rear that MP5 shooters expect. A sling and one magazine are in the box.
Features of the Century Arms AP5 Core
- 8.9 inch threaded barrel in chrome moly vanadium, 1:9.8 twist

- Roller-delayed blowback action, the original MP5 operating system
- Stamped metal receiver
- Fixed front sight in a protective hood, and a rotating drum rear sight
- Sling included
- 17.9 inches overall, 5.5 pounds

Why roller delayed blowback pistol designs shoot flatter
- A roller delayed blowback pistol slows the opening of the breech mechanically rather than by brute bolt mass, so the recoil impulse is spread out instead of arriving all at once
- The felt difference against a straight-blowback 9mm of the same weight is immediately obvious on a timer
- Less reciprocating mass slamming rearward also means less muzzle rise, which is why the MP5 pattern has stayed relevant for sixty years
- It is more complex than straight blowback, which is exactly why clones at this price used to be rare
- The trade is that the system is sensitive to ammunition power: run standard-pressure 9mm rather than the weakest target loads

The drum rear sight and getting it zeroed
The rotating drum rear sight is one of the things people either love or find baffling, and it is worth understanding before you get to the range. The drum carries four apertures: an open V notch and three progressively smaller peep holes, marked for increasing distance. Rotate the drum to select one. Windage and elevation are adjusted with a special tool on the sight itself rather than by drifting anything.
For most shooting with the Century Arms AP5 Core, the second aperture is the one to leave it on. The open notch is quick but coarse, and the smallest apertures are for distances this pistol is unlikely to be used at.
Magazines, accessories and what fits
One 30-round magazine ships with the pistol. Spares are the Century AP5 30-round magazine, which we keep in very large numbers. A Maglula MP5 LULA loader is worth the small outlay, because loading MP5 magazines by thumb is genuinely unpleasant past about round twenty.
Accessory pack fitment matters here. The CIA OT9103 accessories pack is the FULL SIZE one and is the correct pack for this 8.9 inch pistol. The OT9104 pack we also stock is cut for the AP5-M and AP5-P short models and will not fit this gun. Check which pack you are ordering.
The barrel is threaded, but Century does not publish the thread pitch for this model, and MP5 pattern barrels vary between plain threads and a tri-lug collar. Do not order a muzzle device on assumption — call us and we will check the gun before you buy. MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items such as suppressors or short-barreled rifles; that route requires ATF approval through a dealer who handles those transfers.
How the Core compares to the rest of the AP5 range
The Century Arms AP5 Navy is the same 8.9 inch pistol with the Navy-style trigger group housing. If you want the short version, the AP5-P with the 5.75 inch barrel is considerably more compact at the cost of velocity and sight radius. The Core is the plainest and least expensive of the family, and mechanically it gives up nothing. If you want to read how the action itself works, the roller-delayed blowback reference page explains it properly.
Why this firearm earns its place
- Genuine roller-delayed blowback rather than a straight-blowback lookalike
- Stamped metal receiver and the correct MP5 pattern sights, not a polymer approximation
- A sling and a 30-round magazine in the box, and magazines that cost a fraction of what the originals do
- 5.5 pounds and 17.9 inches, which handles far better than the weight suggests because the mass sits centrally
- The most affordable route into the MP5 platform, with a large and growing accessory market
This suits the shooter who has always wanted an MP5 and never wanted to pay what an original costs, the range shooter who values a soft-shooting 9mm, and anyone building a pistol-caliber setup on a budget. It is a pistol rather than a rifle, and it is not a carry gun by any stretch.
Every firearm we ship goes to a licensed dealer in your state for the transfer and the background check. Call us if you need help finding a shop near you that accepts transfers.
What to expect from an 8.9 inch 9mm
An 8.9 inch barrel does real work with 9mm. A 115 grain load that leaves a 4 inch pistol at around 1,150 feet per second will pick up roughly 150 to 200 feet per second from a barrel this length, which shifts the cartridge from adequate to genuinely useful and flattens the trajectory noticeably inside 100 yards.
You also get a sight radius that no handgun can match, which is the other half of why these shoot so well. Combined with the roller-delayed action holding the muzzle down, a competent shooter can keep a full magazine on a torso-sized target at 75 yards without much drama. That is not something you say about a service pistol.
The practical limitation is the same one every pistol-caliber carbine has: 9mm is 9mm, and beyond about 125 yards it runs out of energy and starts dropping fast. Inside that distance the Century Arms AP5 Core is a great deal of fun and a legitimately capable tool.
