Description

The Century Arms AP5 9mm is the full size version of the pattern, and the one most people should be looking at. Where the AP5-P shortens the barrel to 5.75 inches for concealability, this one keeps the original 8.9 inches, which is where the roller delayed action was designed to operate.

This configuration, part number HG6034SB-N, leaves the factory with an SB Tactical brace already fitted. That is the difference between a bare receiver stub and something you can actually shoot well, and it is the reason this is the variant worth paying a little more for.

What the Century Arms AP5 9mm actually is

  • A 9mm Luger semi-automatic pistol on a stamped steel receiver, built to the original roller delayed pattern.
  • An 8.9 inch barrel threaded 1/2×28, with an A2 style muzzle device fitted from the factory.
  • A 1:9.8 in. twist, which is the correct rate for the full range of 9mm bullet weights.
  • An SB Tactical brace on the rear trunnion rather than a bare end cap.
  • Fixed front sight with the rotating drum rear, fully adjustable for windage and elevation.
  • A factory Picatinny optics mount on the receiver. Manufacturer number HG6034SB-N, made in Turkey.

Why the longer barrel changes the Century Arms AP5 9mm

  • 9mm is a pistol cartridge, but it still gains velocity out to roughly the ten inch mark. An 8.9 inch barrel captures most of that; a 5.75 inch one does not.
  • More barrel also means more sight radius, which matters on a gun using iron sights rather than an optic.
  • The roller delayed action was designed around this barrel length. The shorter versions work, but this is the original geometry.
  • Extra mass out front settles the muzzle between shots, which is the whole point of a heavy pistol caliber gun.
  • The trade is size. The Century Arms AP5 9mm is not a concealable firearm and it was never meant to be.

Feeding and accessorizing the Century Arms AP5 9mm

Century publishes the factory sheet on its own site if you want the manufacturer numbers next to ours: the AP5 specification page lists the 8.9 inch barrel, the 1:9.8 twist and the 1/2×28 threads printed above, and states the gun ships with two thirty round magazines, a sling, a cleaning kit and a case.

  • Spare magazines are the cheap upgrade. The Zenith ZF-5 thirty round steel magazine is cut to the same pattern and drops straight into the Century Arms AP5 9mm.
  • For practice, CCI Blazer Brass 115 grain 9mm is the clean burning load most owners settle on after a few cases.
  • Standard pressure ammunition is what this action is tuned for. Very light or very heavy subsonic loads can short stroke a roller gun, so test before you commit to a case of anything unusual.
  • Brass ejects hard and far. Put a net up before you start if you reload, because this action does not treat cases gently.
  • The threads are 1/2×28. We do not sell NFA items such as suppressors; that route runs through a dealer who handles those transfers and requires ATF approval before you take possession.

Choosing between the AP5 and the AP5-P

We stock both. The AP5-P CORE shortens the barrel to 5.75 inches and strips the accessory kit back to one magazine and a sling, which is how it lands a few hundred dollars cheaper. It is the right choice if size is the priority and you were going to buy your own magazines anyway.

The Century Arms AP5 9mm keeps the original barrel length, adds the factory brace and includes the full kit. It shoots better, it is easier to shoot well, and it is the one to buy if the gun is going to live at a range rather than in a bag. Neither is a mistake; they answer different questions.

Why the Century Arms AP5 9mm earns its place

  • It is a genuine roller delayed gun at a price that used to buy a blowback imitation of one.
  • The brace is factory fitted, so nothing needs ordering separately and nothing needs fitting.
  • A Picatinny mount on the receiver means a red dot goes on without a claw mount or a gunsmith.
  • Threaded 1/2×28 from the factory, so a muzzle device fits without sending the barrel anywhere.
  • Magazines for this pattern are common and cheap, which is not true of every 9mm carbine style gun.

The Century Arms AP5 9mm suits the shooter who wants the roller delayed experience in its original proportions, the range that wants a soft shooting 9mm on the rental line, and anyone who has looked at a genuine German gun and at the price of one. It is also the sensible first purchase in this family, because the full size gun teaches you what the platform does before you decide whether you want it shorter.

It is not a carry gun and it is not a rifle. It is a braced pistol, which is its own legal category, and the rules around braces have changed more than once. Confirm the current position for your jurisdiction before you order. Every firearm on this page ships to your chosen FFL for transfer and pickup.

Living with the Century Arms AP5 9mm

Two habits make this platform behave. The first is the HK slap: pull the charging handle back, let it drop out of its notch and slap it forward with the heel of your hand rather than riding it home. Riding the handle is the single most common cause of a failure to go into battery on a roller gun.

The second is cleaning the bolt face and the locking piece rather than just running a patch through the bore. Roller delayed actions collect carbon where the rollers cam into the trunnion, and that is the surface that matters. Ten minutes there is worth an hour anywhere else on the Century Arms AP5 9mm.

Expect the fluted chamber to mark your brass. That is not damage and it is not a fault; the flutes float the case on a layer of gas so it can extract while pressure is still present. Reloaders should inspect rather than assume, but the marks themselves are normal on every gun built this way.
