Description
The Buffalo Bore 45 Auto Rim 200gr JHP is the expanding option at standard pressure, and it does something quietly clever. 200 grains at 1000 fps produces roughly 444 ft-lbs while staying at ordinary 45 ACP pressure, which is performance you would normally have to go to +P 45 ACP to find. No moon clips required. Twenty rounds per box, item 31B/20.

Buffalo Bore 45 Auto Rim 200gr JHP Overview
The bullet is a conventional lead core jacketed hollow point. At 1000 fps it has ample velocity to open properly, which is the whole requirement in a calibre where the bullet is already wide before it expands.
The 45 Auto Rim case is simply a rimmed 45 ACP, created in 1920 so the 1917 service revolvers could be loaded and ejected without half moon clips. Everything except the rim is the same, so this works in any 45 ACP revolver with no clips at all.
Buffalo Bore keeps the Buffalo Bore 45 Auto Rim 200gr JHP at standard 45 ACP pressure and still reaches velocities associated with +P 45 ACP ammunition. A revolver does not have to cycle a slide, which frees the load designer from constraints an autoloader imposes.
45 Auto Rim Hollow Point Ammo Ballistics
The published chronograph figures come from four real revolvers. A 6.5 inch Smith and Wesson 1955 Target gives 1063 fps, a 5.5 inch Model 1917 gives 1046, a four inch Mountain Gun gives 1033, and a 2.5 inch scandium Model 325 gives 950 fps.
Those work out to roughly 502, 486, 474 and 401 ft-lbs. A standard 230 grain 45 ACP load from a five inch pistol makes about 369, so even the small scandium revolver is ahead of it, and the full size guns comfortably so.
Against the +P version of this bullet, which runs 1200 fps for 639 ft-lbs, you are giving up about a third of the energy. What you get back is a standard pressure 45 Auto Rim load that asks nothing unusual of the revolver at all.
Why The 200 Grain JHP Revolver Bullet Suits This Case
The hard cast loads in this line are built to penetrate and nothing else. This one is built to expand, which makes it the right choice if the concern is a person rather than an animal, and the wrong choice if it is the other way round.
At 200 grains it is light for the calibre, and that is deliberate. A 200 grain JHP revolver bullet reaches 1000 fps at standard pressure where a 230 grain bullet would not, and a hollow point needs velocity far more than it needs weight to do its job.
Frontal area is the free advantage. A 45 Auto Rim hollow point ammo bullet is already 0.452 of an inch before it opens, so the starting point is better than any 9mm or 40 achieves after expanding.
And the pressure choice matters for the guns involved. Many 45 ACP revolvers are old, and a load that produces +P 45 ACP performance at standard pressure is a rare thing to be able to offer their owners.

Which Guns Take This Standard Pressure 45 Auto Rim Load
Your revolver needs to be chambered for 45 ACP or 45 Auto Rim. The two cartridges are identical apart from the rim, so this will work in any 45 ACP revolver, and it will do so without clips of any kind.
Standard pressure is the reason to choose this one. Buffalo Bore also builds a +P 200 grain hollow point at 1200 fps, and if your revolver is a sound post war gun that is worth considering, but no moon clip 45 ACP revolver ammunition at standard pressure asks nothing of the gun and is the safe default.
Confirm your point of impact. A 200 grain JHP revolver bullet is lighter than the 230 grain ball these revolvers were generally regulated around, so it will often print somewhat low at twenty five yards.
Practise with it if you can. Recoil at standard pressure is mild, the ammunition is not outrageously expensive, and confidence with the exact load you carry is worth more than a marginal ballistic edge.
