This listing is UPC 023614852469, Browning item 031072227. It weighs about 7 lb 8 oz, measures 46 1/8 in. overall and holds 3 rounds in a detachable box magazine that drops from a hinged floorplate.
Browning BAR Mk3 Speed OVIX 7mm Rem Mag Overview
The BAR has been the classic American hunting autoloader since 1967, and the Mk3 is the current version. It gives you a fast follow up without working a bolt, while keeping the lines and handling of a sporting rifle rather than a tactical one. The Speed OVIX version adds a Smoked Bronze Cerakote finish on the barrel and receiver, a fluted barrel to trim weight, and Browning OVIX camo on the stock, so it is set up for wet, rough hunts.
Gas Operated Action
The BAR uses a gas piston system with a rotating multi lug bolt that locks into the barrel extension, much like a bolt action. That design is a big reason the BAR is known for hunting grade accuracy. The gas system also softens felt recoil compared to a bolt gun in the same caliber, which helps when you need a quick second shot on running game.
Barrel and Chamber
The 24 inch steel barrel has a 1:9.5 twist and a chrome plated chamber that resists corrosion and helps fired cases extract cleanly. The barrel is hammer forged and fluted, and the Cerakote finish protects better than traditional bluing.
OVIX Composite Stock
The OVIX camo composite stock has overmolded grip panels and can be adjusted for cast and drop with shims, so you can fit it to your face and scope height. Browning lists a 14 3/8 inch length of pull, and the stock will not swell or warp in rain or snow.
Hinged Floorplate and Detachable Magazine
The BAR magazine attaches to a hinged floorplate. You can load it in place, or swing the floorplate down and swap magazines. The 7mm Rem Mag magazine holds 3 rounds, and spare magazines are sold by Browning.
Lightweight Alloy Receiver
The receiver is aluminum alloy, which keeps weight down for a semi auto in this class, and it is drilled and tapped for scope bases. The trigger is gold plated.
Where the BAR Shines
The BAR is a favorite for deer drives, open country hogs and other driven hunts where game is moving and quick follow ups matter. It also suits hunters who simply want a reliable autoloader that looks like a traditional rifle. A semi auto does weigh a bit more than most bolt guns and has more parts to keep clean, so plan on regular cleaning of the gas system.
The 7mm Rem Mag Cartridge
The 7mm Remington Magnum has been one of the most popular long range big game cartridges since 1962. It shoots flat enough for long shots across fields and clearcuts and hits hard enough for elk and moose with good bullets. Recoil is a step above a 270 or 30-06, which is where the soft shooting BAR gas system pays off. Factory ammunition is easy to find in many bullet weights.
Mounting a Scope
The receiver is drilled and tapped. Make sure any bases or rings you buy list the BAR Mk3 or BAR Mark II, and pick a scope with enough eye relief for a magnum if you choose one.
State Laws
Some states limit semi automatic rifles for hunting or cap magazine capacity, so check your state game laws before you hunt with it. Pennsylvania allows semi auto rifles for many seasons with a limit on rounds. Pennsylvania buyers can transfer at our Collegeville shop or at any FFL.
