Bond Arms Patriot 45 Colt 410 Derringer – Proven 3in Stainless Two-Shot

Description

The Bond Arms Patriot 45 Colt 410 Derringer is a stainless steel, two-shot derringer with patriotic-themed extended rosewood grips, a 3-inch barrel and a trigger guard. Chambered for 45 Colt and 2.5-inch 410 shotshells, it is a classic American handgun built by Bond Arms in Granbury, Texas, and it ships with a leather driving holster.

Bond Arms Patriot 45 Colt 410 Derringer Overview

Distributor listings call this model the Patriot Defender, with Bond Arms model number BAPA45/410. It is a single-action, over-and-under design with a stainless frame and barrel, an overall length of about 5 inches and a listed weight of 21.5 ounces. That weight is substantial for such a small gun and helps tame the recoil of full-size cartridges. You cock the hammer for each shot, and the firing pin alternates between the top and bottom barrels. Sights are a simple front blade and fixed rear notch, suited to close-range use.

Build Quality and Features

Bond Arms derringers are machined from stainless steel and have a reputation for being far sturdier than cheap pot-metal derringers of the past. The Patriot includes a rebounding hammer, a spring-loaded cam lock lever for opening the barrels, and a cross-bolt safety that blocks the hammer. The extended grips give you more to hold than standard Bond grips, which makes a real difference with heavy loads. The engraved patriotic grip panels make this one stand out in a collection or as a gift.

45 Colt and 410 Shells

Both barrels accept 45 Colt cartridges or 410 shotshells, and you can load one of each. The chambers are cut for 2.5-inch 410 shells only, so do not try to force 3-inch magnum shells into this gun. Expect tight 45 Colt groups at close range and wide shot patterns from a short barrel with 410 loads, which makes snake shot useful around the farm or on the trail. Defensive 410 loads designed for short barrels pattern better than standard birdshot. Test whatever you plan to carry.

Recoil, Capacity and Handling

A small gun firing large cartridges kicks hard. Full-power 45 Colt in a 21-ounce derringer produces sharp recoil and significant muzzle flip, so practice with lighter cowboy-action loads first. Capacity is two rounds, and reloading means opening the barrels and extracting each case by hand, which is slow. The single-action trigger requires deliberate hammer cocking before each shot. These are real limitations to understand before choosing a derringer as your only defensive handgun.

Barrel Options and Versatility

One of the best things about the Bond Arms system is its interchangeable barrels. The frame accepts other Bond barrels in a wide range of calibers, from 22 LR to 357 Magnum and 9mm, so one frame can serve several roles. Barrel swaps take only a few minutes with a hex key, and extra barrels cost much less than a second gun. Barrel compatibility depends on frame size, so confirm the barrel you want fits this model before ordering.

Carry and Holster

Bond includes a leather driving holster designed to sit comfortably while you are seated in a vehicle. Because the gun is short and flat, it also fits well in pocket and ankle holsters made for Bond derringers. Carry it with the hammer down and the safety engaged, and always use a holster that covers the trigger. Weight is noticeable compared with polymer pocket pistols, so a good belt and holster matter for all-day comfort.

State Laws and Ownership

Derringers are handguns under the law and follow the same transfer rules as any pistol. Some states maintain handgun rosters or ban certain models, and carry permits are required in many jurisdictions. Pennsylvania buyers complete the standard PICS check at the dealer, and a license to carry is needed to carry concealed or in a vehicle. Confirm your local rules with your receiving FFL before ordering.
