Description

Berger 6.5 Creedmoor 135gr Hunter Classic Hunter hybrid hunting cartridge

The 6.5 Creedmoor became the default American deer rifle for good reasons, and the Berger 6.5 Creedmoor 135gr Hunter is the load that gets the most out of one without asking you to modify the rifle.

Match Accuracy in a Magazine-Length Hunting Round

Berger long-range hunting bullets are famously long, and a long bullet seated where it shoots best often will not fit a factory magazine box. The Classic Hunter line exists to remove that problem: the nose is shortened and the bearing surface repositioned so the finished round comes in at a maximum overall length of 2.825 inches, inside 6.5 Creedmoor SAAMI spec.

The Berger 6.5 Creedmoor 135gr Hunter therefore drops into an unmodified Tikka, Ruger, Bergara, Savage or Remington magazine and feeds normally, while keeping the hybrid ogive that gives Berger bullets their accuracy. For a hunter whose rifle already shoots adequately and who suspects it could shoot better, that is the whole proposition.

Velocity is 2850 feet per second from a 26 inch barrel for 2435 foot-pounds. Most hunting rifles wear 22 or 24 inch barrels, so expect somewhere between 2700 and 2800 in practice, and build your drop chart from a chronograph rather than from the box.

Berger 6.5 Creedmoor 135gr Hunter Specifications

Terminal behaviour follows the Berger hunting pattern: the bullet penetrates two to three inches before the jacket begins to open, then expands rapidly and fragments through the vitals. That delayed onset puts the energy inside the animal rather than on the hide, and on deer-sized game it produces very fast kills.

The same characteristic is the load limitation. A fragmenting bullet is not what you want for a heavy shoulder shot on elk, and the Berger 6.5 Creedmoor 135gr Hunter is honestly a deer, antelope and hog load rather than an elk load. If elk are on the list, the 156 grain Elite Hunter is the better choice in this cartridge, and a bonded bullet better still.

Twist rate matters: 1:8 or faster. Nearly every 6.5 Creedmoor barrel made is 1:8, so this is rarely a problem, but confirm on an unusual rifle before ordering. A G7 ballistic coefficient of 0.303 with a form factor of 0.913 is respectable for a magazine-length hunting bullet and keeps the trajectory manageable to 400 yards and beyond.

Honest Notes on This Load

Buy the Berger 6.5 Creedmoor 135gr Hunter if you hunt deer, antelope or hogs with a factory 6.5 Creedmoor and want match-grade consistency without changing anything about the rifle. It is the sensible upgrade from generic hunting ammunition.

Skip it if you shoot a custom rifle with a long magazine and take shots past 600 yards. Berger Elite Hunter and Long Range Hybrid bullets have better ballistic coefficients and your rifle can feed them.

Skip it for elk and larger game. A 6.5 Creedmoor with a fragmenting bullet is a marginal combination on animals that size, and there is no sense pretending otherwise when better options exist in the same rifle.

For match work rather than hunting: the 130gr Hybrid OTM Tactical and, at distance, the 144gr Long Range Hybrid Target. Berger publishes complete 135gr Classic Hunter ballistic data on its own site.

MAG5 Firearms stocks Berger hunting and match ammunition across the 6.5 Creedmoor range. Tell us what you are hunting and how far, and we will point you at the right bullet.
