Description
The Beretta 1301 Tactical Compact Mod 2 is Beretta’s competition-derived gas gun set up for defensive and duty use. The Blink action cycles fast enough that the limiting factor is how quickly you can get the sights back on target, and Mod 2 brings the changes people were asking for: a full-length Picatinny rail machined into the receiver, an M-LOK handguard, enlarged controls and an oversized loading port.
This is the Compact configuration, part number J131M2CTT187, with an 18.5-inch barrel, a 7+1 magazine and a fixed black synthetic stock. At 18.5 inches the barrel clears the federal minimum with room to spare, so the Beretta 1301 Tactical Compact Mod 2 is an ordinary shotgun purchase with no additional paperwork.
What Mod 2 changed on the Beretta 1301 Tactical Compact Mod 2
- A full-length Picatinny rail on the receiver, so a red dot mounts without an adapter plate
- An M-LOK handguard for lights and hand stops, which the earlier gun had no clean way to take
- An enlarged bolt release and charging handle that a gloved or gross-motor grip can find
- A widened, bevelled loading port that makes reloads under stress far less fiddly
- A larger safety button that is easier to locate without breaking the firing grip

Why the Blink gas system matters here
- Cycles roughly 36 percent faster than comparable gas guns by Beretta’s own measurement
- Keeps the sight picture disturbed for less time between shots
- Self-cleaning piston design that tolerates a long string without attention
- Runs a wide spread of 2.75-inch and 3-inch loads without adjustment
- The same action Beretta uses in three-gun competition, where cycling speed is the entire point

Setting one up
The Beretta 1301 Tactical Compact Mod 2 is built to be accessorised, and the two things worth doing first are a red dot and a light. The receiver rail is machined in rather than bolted on, so an optic keeps its zero through recoil that would shake a clamp-on mount loose. A light on the M-LOK handguard is not optional for a defensive gun: you cannot identify a target you cannot see.
For ammunition, buckshot does the work. Barnes Defense 00 Buck in nine pellets is the conventional choice, while Barnes Defense #4 Buck trades penetration for pellet count. Pattern whichever you choose at the distances inside your own home before you rely on it. Shotshell pressure and dimension standards are published by SAAMI.
Barrel length and the law
At 18.5 inches the Beretta 1301 Tactical Compact Mod 2 sits above the 18-inch federal minimum for a shotgun barrel, and its overall length is above 26 inches. That means it transfers like any other shotgun. MAG5 Firearms does not deal in NFA items such as short-barrelled shotguns or suppressors, which require a separate ATF application and approval before transfer.
State and municipal rules still vary, particularly on magazine capacity and on features such as pistol grips, so check your own jurisdiction before ordering.
Why this shotgun earns its place
- A competition action in a defensive package, rather than a duty gun with a rail added
- The Beretta 1301 Tactical Compact Mod 2 mounts an optic and a light without a single aftermarket adapter
- Fixed stock and 18.5-inch barrel keep it simple to buy and own in most states
- Beretta’s Blink system is measurably faster than the gas guns it competes with
- Backed by a manufacturer with a long service and parts network in the United States
The Beretta 1301 Tactical Compact Mod 2 suits someone buying one shotgun for home defence who would rather start with a gun that is already set up than build one from a base model. If you prefer a pistol grip and a lighter colour, the Flat Dark Earth pistol-grip version is the same gun differently configured, and the A300 Ultima Patrol covers similar ground at a lower price.
All firearm purchases ship to a licensed dealer and require a completed background check. Contact MAG5 Firearms if you need help arranging the transfer.
