Description

The Barrett MRAD Conversion Kit in 6.5 Creedmoor is what the whole MRAD platform was designed around. Barrett built the rifle with a user changeable barrel so one receiver could follow a shooter across chamberings, and this kit is that promise delivered: a complete 24 inch fluted stainless barrel assembly, the matching bolt, a ten round magazine and a ZCORR branded bag to keep it in. Swapping it takes one tool and a few minutes at a bench.

There is no gunsmith, no headspace gauge and no second serial number, which is the argument for buying into the MRAD system rather than buying two rifles.

What Is in the Barrett MRAD Conversion Kit

The barrel is 24 inches of fluted stainless with a 1:8 twist, which is the standard pairing for 6.5 Creedmoor and suits the heavy 140 to 147 grain match bullets the cartridge is built around. It arrives as a complete assembly, already fitted to its barrel extension.

A complete bolt comes with it, matched to the 6.5 Creedmoor case head. This is the part that makes a conversion kit a conversion kit rather than just a barrel, and it is why the swap does not need a smith.

One ten round magazine is included, along with a ZCORR Barrett branded bag for storing the barrel when it is off the rifle. That bag matters more than it sounds: a bare match barrel rolling around in a truck is a barrel that will not shoot the same next time.

Why 6.5 Creedmoor on an MRAD

6.5 Creedmoor is the cheapest way to shoot a lot of rounds through a precision rifle. Factory match ammunition is available everywhere, brass and components are easy to find, and recoil is mild enough that most shooters can spot their own impacts without help. For practice and for club matches it is hard to argue with.

Against 308 Winchester it holds velocity better and drifts less in wind at distance, which is why it displaced 308 in practical precision competition. Against the magnums it gives up energy and outright reach, but it burns barrels far more slowly and costs a fraction as much per round.

Barrel life is the honest caveat. A 6.5 Creedmoor match barrel is a consumable, generally measured in a few thousand rounds before accuracy falls off. On an MRAD that is less painful than on a conventional rifle, because replacing it is another conversion kit rather than a trip to a gunsmith.

  • Turns an MRAD you already own into a 6.5 Creedmoor in a few minutes at a bench
  • Complete bolt included, so no gunsmith and no headspace work
  • A 24 inch fluted stainless barrel with a 1:8 twist for heavy match bullets
  • Ten round magazine and a ZCORR storage bag included
  • No FFL transfer required, because a barrel and bolt are not a firearm

Who it suits

This is for the MRAD owner who wants a cheap practice and match chambering alongside a heavier calibre, and for anyone whose 6.5 barrel has reached the end of its accurate life. It is not useful on its own: you need an MRAD receiver to fit it to.

Fitting and Ordering Notes for the Barrett MRAD Conversion Kit

Fitting it is straightforward. Back off the barrel clamp screws with the supplied tool, draw the barrel assembly forward out of the receiver, slide the new one in against its stop and torque the screws back to Barrett’s figure. Change the bolt to the one that came with the kit and the rifle is a 6.5 Creedmoor. Check zero afterwards: a barrel swap will shift point of impact, and most shooters find each barrel wants its own recorded zero.

6.5 Creedmoor is a SAAMI standardised cartridge with specifications published by SAAMI, so factory ammunition, brass and dies are all easy to source. For match work the 140 to 147 grain hybrids are the usual choice; for hunting, a 130 to 143 grain bonded bullet covers deer sized game comfortably.

Because a barrel and bolt are not a firearm, this kit ships directly to you with no dealer transfer. If you do not own an MRAD yet, our MRAD in 308 Winchester is the entry point into the system, and the MRAD in 7mm PRC is the long range end of it. More of our inventory is on the MAG5 Firearms shop page.

Getting the Most From a 24 Inch 6.5 Creedmoor

Twenty four inches is the length most 6.5 Creedmoor load data assumes, and it is where the cartridge produces the velocity its published ballistics are built on. A 140 grain match bullet out of a 24 inch tube generally runs somewhere around 2,700 feet per second, which keeps it supersonic past 1,200 yards in most conditions. Shorter barrels give that up faster than people expect, so if your shooting is genuinely long this is the length to have.

Record a separate zero and a separate dope card for each barrel you own. Point of impact will shift when you change barrels, and velocity will differ enough that a shared ballistic solution will put you off target well before the numbers look wrong on paper. Ten minutes at 100 yards after every swap saves an embarrassing first stage.

Barrel break in is worth a word. Opinions vary and manufacturers disagree, but a modest routine of shooting and cleaning over the first fifty rounds costs very little and lets the bore settle. After that, track your round count. Accuracy on a match barrel does not fall off a cliff so much as drift, and a logbook is the only way to know when it started.
