Barnes VOR-TX 6.5 Creedmoor 120gr TTSX BT – Reliable Deer Load

Description

The Barnes VOR-TX 6.5 Creedmoor 120gr TTSX BT is the standard line copper load for the cartridge that made long range hunting mainstream. It leaves the muzzle at roughly 2910 fps carrying about 2257 ft-lbs of energy, behind a 0.412 ballistic coefficient. It is the fastest of the three Barnes 6.5 Creedmoor loads and the right pick for shots inside 400 yards. Each box holds 20 rounds.

Barnes VOR-TX 6.5 Creedmoor 120gr TTSX BT Overview

The projectile is machined from a solid copper billet, so there is no lead core to shed and no jacket to separate. A polymer tip caps the hollow nose, protects it in the magazine and drives rearward on impact to start expansion immediately.

The nose opens into four sharp copper petals at roughly double the original diameter and stays attached to the shank, with weight retention close to 100 percent. That is what lets a 120 grain bullet drive through a deer shoulder and exit rather than stopping in it.

120 Grain TTSX Boat Tail Performance

We stock three Barnes loads in this cartridge and they are genuinely different. This 120 grain TTSX is the fastest and the standard hunting choice. The 127 grain LRX is built to keep expanding at long range, opening down around 1600 fps. The 140 grain Harvest is a lead core Sierra bullet at a lower price.

Barnes machines relief grooves into the bearing surface of the projectile. Those grooves reduce bore contact, lowering pressure and cutting copper fouling, which helps a long solid bullet group well out of a factory barrel.

Why Hunters Choose 6.5 Creedmoor Hunting Ammo

The 6.5 Creedmoor earned its reputation honestly. It fits a short action, recoils lightly enough that almost anyone can shoot it well, and pushes reasonably slippery bullets fast enough to stay lethal past where most hunters should be shooting. Barrel life is good and ammunition is everywhere.

What this 6.5 Creedmoor hunting ammo brings is a bullet that matches the cartridge. Much of what is sold in 6.5 is either match ammunition with a bullet that behaves unpredictably on game or budget hunting ammunition with a soft projectile. A monolithic copper bullet removes both worries.

Be honest about the ceiling. The Creedmoor is a deer, antelope and black bear cartridge that will take an elk with good placement at moderate range. It is not a substitute for a 300 magnum on a big bull at distance.

Range Notes For This Polymer Tipped Copper Bullet

Twist rate is not a concern. Every 6.5 Creedmoor barrel made runs 1 in 8, which stabilizes a 120 grain copper bullet with room to spare.

A polymer tipped copper bullet prints to a different point of impact than the match ammunition many Creedmoor owners practise with. Zero with this exact load, foul a clean barrel with a round or two first, then leave the scope alone.

At 2910 fps the Barnes VOR-TX 6.5 Creedmoor 120gr TTSX stays above reliable expansion speed past 400 yards in most barrels. If you expect shots beyond that, the 127 grain LRX in the Long Range line opens at considerably lower velocity and is the better tool.
