Description
The Barnes VOR-TX 45-70 Govt 300gr TSX FN brings modern copper bullet construction to a cartridge that has been in continuous service since 1873. It leaves the muzzle at roughly 1925 fps carrying about 2469 ft-lbs of energy. Nearly half an inch of copper arriving with that much behind it does serious work on anything in thick timber, and the flat nose profile is what makes it safe in a tube magazine. Each box holds 20 rounds.

Barnes VOR-TX 45-70 Govt 300gr TSX FN Overview
The projectile is machined from solid copper with a deep hollow nose capped by a flat meplat. There is no lead core to shed and no jacket to separate, so the bullet opens into four sharp petals at roughly double the original diameter and then keeps driving straight.
Weight retention runs close to 100 percent. On a 45 caliber bullet that is already wide before expansion, retaining all of it produces the kind of wound channel that stops a bear or an elk quickly at close range.
300 Grain TSX Flat Nose Performance
The 300 grain TSX flat nose is lighter than the 405 grain loads traditionally associated with the cartridge, and the trade buys velocity. Copper penetrates far beyond what its weight suggests, so a lighter faster bullet gives flatter trajectory without giving up the penetration this cartridge is bought for.
The flat nose is not styling. In a tube magazine rifle a pointed bullet resting against the primer of the round ahead of it is a genuine hazard under recoil, which is why 45-70 ammunition has always been flat nosed. Barnes also machines relief grooves into the bearing surface to lower pressure and cut copper fouling.
Why Hunters Choose 45-70 Government Hunting Ammo
The 45-70 Government has outlived every cartridge it was designed alongside. In a Marlin 1895 or a Henry it is short, fast handling and devastating inside 150 yards, which is why guides in bear country still carry one and why it remains a favourite for hogs and elk in thick cover.
A pressure note that genuinely matters. The 45-70 is loaded at three very different pressure levels. This 45-70 Government hunting ammo is loaded to SAAMI specification, which is correct for modern lever actions such as the Marlin 1895, the Henry and the Ruger No. 1. It is not appropriate for an original trapdoor Springfield or a replica built to that standard, which need much milder ammunition. Check what your rifle is before you buy.
Recoil is heavy but slow, more of a shove than the sharp jolt of a magnum. Most shooters handle it better than the energy figures suggest.

Range Notes For This All Copper Big Bore Bullet
An all copper big bore bullet prints to a different point of impact than the lead core ammunition your rifle was probably sighted in with, and a 300 grain bullet will shoot to a different place than a 405 grain load. Zero with this exact ammunition.
Cycle a full magazine through the rifle before the season. Lever actions can be particular about overall length and bullet profile, and confirming it beats finding out at the wrong moment.
With a 0.163 ballistic coefficient the Barnes VOR-TX 45-70 Govt 300gr TSX drops steeply. Treat it as a 150 yard cartridge and know your holdover beyond 100. Expansion stays reliable throughout that range.
