The Barnes VOR-TX 350 Legend 170gr TSX FN is the copper hunting load for the mildest of the modern straight wall cartridges. It leaves the muzzle at roughly 2125 fps carrying about 1705 ft-lbs of energy. The 350 Legend was designed to meet straight wall hunting regulations while keeping recoil low enough that anyone can shoot it well, and an all copper bullet is what makes the most of its modest velocity. Barnes VOR-TX 350 Legend 170gr TSX FN Overview

The projectile is machined from solid copper with a deep hollow nose and a flat meplat. There is no lead core to shed and no jacket to separate, so instead of fragmenting the bullet opens into four sharp petals at roughly double the original diameter and keeps driving.

That behaviour matters more here than in a fast cartridge. At 2125 fps there is not a great deal of velocity margin, and a bullet that gives up weight on impact has little left to finish the job. Recovered TSX bullets typically retain close to all of their mass.

170 Grain TSX Flat Nose Performance

The 170 grain TSX flat nose is lighter than the 180 and 190 grain lead core loads common in this cartridge, and the trade is deliberate. Copper penetrates well beyond what its weight suggests, so dropping mass buys velocity, and velocity is exactly what a copper bullet needs to open reliably.

Barnes machines relief grooves into the bearing surface of the projectile. Those grooves reduce bore contact, lowering pressure and cutting copper fouling, which helps a wide bullet group well out of a short barrelled deer rifle.

The 350 Legend exists because Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa and several other states restrict deer hunting to straight wall cartridges. An all copper straight wall bullet prints to a different point of impact than the lead core ammunition most 350 Legend rifles are sighted in with. Zero with this exact load, foul a clean barrel with a round or two first, then leave the optic alone.

If you run this in an AR, function test a full magazine before the season. The 350 Legend feeds from a single stack magazine and is more sensitive to magazine condition than a 5.56 upper.

Copper needs velocity to open, and at 2125 fps the Barnes VOR-TX 350 Legend 170gr TSX has less margin than a fast cartridge. Expansion is reliable inside roughly 200 yards, which matches the practical range of the cartridge anyway.
