Description

Barnes VOR-TX 300 RUM 165gr TTSX pairs one of the largest 30 calibre cases ever standardised with a bullet that can survive being launched from it. The .300 Remington Ultra Magnum generates enormous velocity, and that velocity is exactly what destroys conventional bullets.

Velocity Is the Problem a Copper Bullet Solves

A 300 Remington Ultra Magnum load drives a 165 grain bullet substantially faster than a .300 Winchester Magnum does, and far faster than a .30-06. At close range that means impact velocities high enough to tear a conventional lead-core bullet apart before it penetrates, particularly on a shoulder shot.

Barnes VOR-TX 300 RUM 165gr TTSX handles it. With no lead core to separate from a jacket, the bullet opens into four petals and retains essentially all its weight regardless of how fast it arrives. The design that makes copper useful at low velocity also makes it robust at very high velocity, which is the less discussed half of the argument.

The polymer tip keeps expansion consistent at the other end of the range. A solid copper hollow point can be slow to open once velocity has dropped at distance, and the tip drives into the nose cavity to force the petals apart. Between the two you get reliable behaviour across an unusually wide velocity band.

Barnes VOR-TX 300 RUM 165gr TTSX Specifications

Barnes VOR-TX 300 RUM 165gr TTSX is a 165 grain elk ammunition load in .300 Remington Ultra Magnum using the all copper Tipped TSX bullet, 20 rounds to the box, from Barnes Bullets. It sits in the standard VOR-TX hunting line.

Being solid copper makes Barnes VOR-TX 300 RUM 165gr TTSX lead free magnum hunting ammunition, relevant in California and the expanding set of federal refuges and state wildlife areas requiring non-lead projectiles. Western elk country increasingly includes ground where that rule applies.

One hundred and sixty five grains is moderate for the cartridge, where 180 and 200 grain bullets are also common. With a copper bullet that retains its weight, the usual reason to go heavier for penetration largely disappears, and the lighter bullet buys additional velocity from a case that already has plenty.

Recoil, Barrel Life and Whether You Need It

Recoil from Barnes VOR-TX 300 RUM 165gr TTSX is heavy and unapologetic. The .300 RUM burns a great deal of powder, and in a rifle light enough to carry up a mountain it is genuinely punishing. Most owners shoot it sparingly, which is the opposite of what builds skill. If you will not practise with it, a .30-06 you shoot well will kill more elk.

Barrel life with Barnes VOR-TX 300 RUM 165gr TTSX is short by any normal standard. A case this large behind a .308 inch bore erodes throats quickly, and a shooter putting a few hundred rounds a year through one should expect to rebarrel far sooner than with a standard cartridge. That is the price of the velocity, not a defect.

Muzzle blast is severe and a brake makes it worse for everyone nearby. If you shoot it braked, use proper hearing protection and warn anyone next to you. A suppressor is the civilised answer where legal, and the cartridge is common enough that threaded barrels are widely available.

Elk and open country hunters who want Barnes VOR-TX 300 RUM 165gr TTSX for maximum reach and energy from a 30 calibre, and accept the recoil, barrel wear and blast that come with it.

If the recoil is more than you want to practise with, the VOR-TX RR 300 Win Mag 130gr is a far gentler magnum, and the VOR-TX RR 30-06 130gr TTSX is gentler still in a cartridge that kills elk perfectly well at sane ranges.

Store Barnes VOR-TX 300 RUM 165gr TTSX indoors, dry and out of heat. A case this large is unusually sensitive to temperature-driven pressure and velocity shifts, which shows up as vertical stringing at the distances the cartridge exists to shoot.

One more consideration specific to the Ultra Magnum case. Brass and factory ammunition for the .300 RUM are considerably more expensive and less widely stocked than for the .300 Winchester Magnum, and that gap has widened as the Winchester round held its popularity and the Ultra Magnum did not. If you own one, buy ammunition when you see it rather than assuming a shop will have it in October. Confirming a zero and hunting a season should be treated as a single purchase from one lot.
