Description

Barnes 270 Win 130gr JHP BT is the .270 Winchester in its most traditional form. One hundred and thirty grains is the weight the cartridge was introduced with in 1925 and the one that built its reputation, and a hollow point boat tail is a straightforward, thoroughly understood way to deliver it.

The Original 270 Weight

When Winchester introduced the .270 in the Model 54, the 130 grain load was the headline. It shot flatter than anything a deer hunter had used before, with recoil most people could tolerate, and that combination is what turned a bottlenecked .30-06 case into a legend.

Barnes 270 Win 130gr JHP BT still does exactly that. It leaves the muzzle fast, drops little inside 300 yards, and carries enough bullet to kill a deer decisively without the recoil of a .30 calibre firing something heavier. If you are shooting deer and antelope in open country, this remains close to an ideal combination.

The jacketed hollow point boat tail construction is conventional and that is fine. The cavity forces reliable expansion, the boat tail preserves velocity downrange where the .270 does its work, and a lead core produces the rapid energy transfer that makes the cartridge hit harder than its modest bullet weight suggests.

Barnes 270 Win 130gr JHP BT Specifications

Barnes 270 Win 130gr JHP BT is a 130 grain .270 Winchester load with a jacketed hollow point boat tail bullet, 20 rounds to the box, from Barnes Bullets. It belongs to the Barnes centerfire rifle ammunition range, which uses conventional lead-core bullets rather than the solid copper designs the company built its name on.

Every .270 Winchester rifle uses a 1 in 10 twist, which stabilizes a 130 grain bullet without any question. Unlike the .223 and the heavier end of the .243, there is nothing to verify before you buy and nothing that will catch you out.

Because Barnes 270 Win 130gr JHP BT uses a conventional hollow point rather than a bonded or monolithic design, expect good expansion and adequate penetration on a broadside shot, with less margin than a premium bullet if the angle is poor. That is the trade at this price, and for most deer hunting it is a perfectly sensible one.

Elk, Range and Meat Damage

On elk, Barnes 270 Win 130gr JHP BT is at the light end and a conventional hollow point is not the construction you want. The .270 can take elk, but with this bullet weight and this construction you need a broadside shot at moderate range and nothing else. If elk are a real part of your season, a 150 grain bullet or a heavier cartridge gives you meaningfully more margin.

Trajectory is the cartridge’s selling point and it holds up. Zeroed at 200 yards a 130 grain .270 is still within a few inches at 300, which means range estimation errors cost you less than with almost any traditional deer cartridge. Just remember that what the cartridge can do and what you can do at 300 yards are different questions.

One practical note on Barnes 270 Win 130gr JHP BT: a fast, light hollow point at close range can cause more meat damage than a heavier or tougher bullet. A shoulder shot at fifty yards will bruise more than you might like. Behind the shoulder through the ribs solves that and kills just as quickly.

Deer and antelope hunters who want Barnes 270 Win 130gr JHP BT as the classic .270 load, and anyone who values flat trajectory and moderate recoil for open country.

For a heavier bullet with a tipped hunting design, the Harvest 270 Win 140gr steps up to a Sierra Tipped GameKing, and where lead is restricted the VOR-TX RR 270 Win 110gr TTSX is the all copper option. A CZ 600 Plus Alpha in .270 suits any of them.

Store Barnes 270 Win 130gr JHP BT indoors, dry and out of heat, and hunt the lot you sighted in with. At the ranges where the .270 is supposed to be earning its keep, a small velocity difference between lots turns into a visible one on target.
