Description

Barnes 243 Win 100gr JHP BT sits in the Centerfire line rather than the copper VOR-TX range, and it takes the .243 to the heavy end of its useful bullet weights. One hundred grains is as much bullet as the cartridge reasonably carries, and it is the weight most .243 owners settle on for deer.

Heavy for the Caliber, and Deliberately So

The .243 Winchester was designed as a dual-purpose cartridge: light bullets for varmints, heavier ones for deer. Fifty-five and 70 grain loads leave the muzzle very fast and come apart spectacularly on a coyote. A 100 grain 243 Winchester load does something different, trading velocity for sectional density and penetration.

Sectional density is the quiet reason Barnes 243 Win 100gr JHP BT works. A heavier bullet of the same diameter is longer, and a longer bullet resists being stopped. In a caliber with as little frontal area as .243, penetration is the thing that decides whether a deer drops or runs, so bullet weight matters more here than in a .30 calibre.

The jacketed hollow point boat tail construction gives you reliable expansion with a conventional lead core. The boat tail preserves velocity downrange, which matters because expansion needs speed, and the hollow cavity forces the jacket outward on impact rather than leaving it to chance.

Barnes 243 Win 100gr JHP BT Specifications

Barnes 243 Win 100gr JHP BT is a 100 grain .243 Winchester load with a jacketed hollow point boat tail bullet, 20 rounds to the box, from Barnes Bullets. It belongs to the Barnes centerfire rifle ammunition range, which uses conventional lead-core projectiles rather than the monolithic copper designs the company is better known for.

Twist rate is worth a moment of thought at this weight. Most .243 rifles use a 1 in 10 twist, which stabilizes a 100 grain lead-core bullet comfortably. A few older varmint-profile barrels are cut slower at 1 in 12, and those can be marginal with the heaviest bullets. Shoot a group at 100 yards and look at the holes before you assume.

The conventional hollow point in Barnes 243 Win 100gr JHP BT rather than a bonded or monolithic design keeps the price reasonable. On deer at normal ranges that construction is entirely adequate; it opens well and penetrates enough with a broadside shot. It simply gives you less margin than a premium bullet if the angle is poor.

Range, Pelts and Shot Selection

On deer, Barnes 243 Win 100gr JHP BT is a 300 yard load in terms of energy and expansion, and further than most people should be shooting at game anyway. Past that the bullet slows toward the bottom of its expansion window and you are relying on a hollow point that may not open properly. Set your limit from your own shooting rather than a ballistic table.

If you use the same rifle on coyotes and keep the pelts, be aware that a 100 grain hollow point is not fur-friendly. It produces a large exit wound at close range. Hunters who sell fur generally drop to a lighter bullet or a non-expanding design, and accept the trade on deer.

Shot placement carries more weight with Barnes 243 Win 100gr JHP BT than with a bigger caliber. Broadside or quartering away, behind the shoulder, and pass on the rest. The hunters who swear by the .243 do so because they hunt that way. The ones who blame the cartridge usually asked it to do something a .243 was never going to do.

Deer and antelope hunters who want Barnes 243 Win 100gr JHP BT as the heaviest practical bullet, plus shooters who use the same rifle on predators.

If you hunt where lead is restricted, the VOR-TX RR 243 Win 80gr TTSX is the all copper option, and the Harvest 243 Win 90gr splits the difference with a tipped Sierra hunting bullet. A Ruger Hawk Hunter in .243 is a light, accurate rifle to run any of them through.

Store Barnes 243 Win 100gr JHP BT indoors and dry, and keep one lot together for a season. The .243 is accurate enough that a lot-to-lot shift shows on paper, and a second box costs less than a missed opportunity.
