The Auto-Ordnance Thompson Deluxe wears an 18 inch finned barrel with a Cutts compensator, American walnut stock and vertical foregrip, a blued finish, and it comes with the 100-round drum that made the gun famous — plus a 20-round stick for when you want to actually carry it, and a case to keep it all in.

What the Deluxe Configuration Gives You

The Deluxe is the full-dress 1927A-1. The barrel is finned along its length for cooling, which is a feature inherited from a gun designed to fire at several hundred rounds per minute and is now purely a matter of looks, and the muzzle carries a Cutts compensator. The furniture is American walnut throughout, with a vertical foregrip rather than the plain horizontal type.

The Auto-Ordnance Thompson Deluxe is semi-automatic, firing one round per trigger pull from a closed bolt, and it is a Title I firearm in every respect — an ordinary transfer, no tax stamp, no ATF approval beyond the standard background check. A note on the case. It is included, which matters more than it sounds: a Thompson with a drum fitted does not fit any ordinary rifle case, and buying one afterwards is both awkward and expensive. If you want a Thompson to shoot regularly rather than to own, the Commando configuration is lighter on the wallet and on the arms.

Ammunition, Handling and Transfer

The Auto-Ordnance Thompson Deluxe runs standard 45 ACP, and 230 grain round nose full metal jacket is what the pattern was built around. The feed geometry comes from a design intended for ball ammunition, so hollow points are worth testing before you rely on them, and lead round nose is best avoided in a gun you would rather not scrub out afterwards.

A Thompson shoots the way it does because of its mass. Recoil from 45 ACP disappears into thirteen pounds of steel and walnut, the sight picture barely moves between shots, and a new shooter can put rounds on a target with it immediately.
